A leading company is seeking Senior Technical Writers to support FEMA disaster recovery operations. Responsibilities include creating technical documentation, drafting memorandums, and coordinating with field staff to ensure compliance with FEMA standards. Ideal candidates have extensive disaster recovery experience and strong technical writing skills.
We are currently seeking Senior Technical Writers to support our client's efforts with FEMA disaster recovery operations across the United States. FEMA's mission is to support citizens and first responders to ensure that, as a nation, we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.
Pay: $50/hr
Location: Remote
Project: Puerto Rico
Support FEMA's Public Assistance program by developing clear, accurate, and comprehensive technical documents.
Draft, edit, and finalize Determination Memorandums, Scopes of Work (SOW), Damage Descriptions and Dimensions (DDD), and appeals in accordance with FEMA policy and guidance.
Assist with the creation and submission of Project Worksheets (PWs), ensuring alignment with federal requirements and public assistance eligibility standards.
Coordinate closely with Program Delivery Managers (PDMGs), Site Inspectors, and other technical staff to translate field observations into FEMA-compliant documentation.
Conduct QA/QC reviews of documentation to ensure accuracy, clarity, and completeness.
Support efficient documentation through FEMA's Grants Portal and related systems.
Stay current with FEMA policy and procedures, including recent guidance and updates to the Public Assistance delivery model.
Bachelor's degree with 10 years of relevant experience in disaster fieldwork or related field
- OR - Graduate degree or professional registration with 5 years of experience
- OR - 15 years of hands-on disaster experience in lieu of degree
Completion of the following FEMA Independent Study courses is required:
IS-1000: Public Assistance Program and Eligibility
IS-1001: The Public Assistance Delivery Model Orientation
IS-1002: FEMA Grants Portal - Transparency at Every Step
IS-1004: The FEMA Site Inspection Process
IS-1018: Determination Memorandums and Appeals
Familiarity with FEMA positions 7116 (Program Delivery Manager) and 7117 (Site Inspection) is a plus
Strong technical writing and editing skills with a keen eye for detail
Ability to interpret complex data and field notes to draft technical documentation
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word and Excel
U.S. citizenship and the ability to pass an FBI background check are required
Must be able to mobilize within 24-48 hours and commit to 6 months or longer on assignment
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, remote environment with minimal supervision
