Job Description

The location of this position is flexible and can be performed from any of our Apex offices (Fargo, Bismarck, Dickinson, ND or Detroit Lakes, St. Cloud, or Minnetonka MN) or remotely within 250 miles of an Apex office. This position is considered a strategic hire and offers an opportunity to develop a structural-bridge team by expanding Apex’s transportation capabilities to public and private clients. The person will report directly to Apex’s Transportation Sector Leader. Attendance in person at key business, client, and project meetings, including personnel meetings if they are a direct supervisor, is expected.

Key responsibilities include technical work and managing projects involving bridge designs and drainage structures for transportation and water resource projects. The role also involves developing new opportunities, preparing technical proposals, participating in project pursuit interviews, and collaborating with other project managers.

Qualification Requirements:

• A Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering, with 10+ years of bridge engineering experience.
• Licensed to practice structural engineering for bridges in the primary state of practice or able to obtain license within 6 months if licensed elsewhere.
• Experience with transportation projects and public agencies in North Dakota and Minnesota.
• Experience with in-service bridge inspection.
• Proficient in Microsoft Windows/Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Detail-oriented, self-motivated, with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to operate a computer under ergonomic conditions.
• Regular outdoor work required.
• Ability to lift up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 25 pounds occasionally.
• Prolonged standing and walking may be required.
• Must work scheduled hours and perform duties satisfactorily.

Typical Tasks and Duties:

• Perform bridge engineering calculations, analysis, and design tasks independently.
• Write technical specifications, reports, and correspondence.
• Lead design efforts as engineer-of-record on various bridge projects.
• Check design work of team members.
• Mentor less experienced team members.
• Work with technicians to produce engineering plans.
• Meet deadlines and project budgets.
• Employ design standards related to bridges.
• Participate in business development and marketing activities.
• Prepare technical proposals and participate in project pursuit interviews.
• Contribute to team and company meetings.
• Assist in developing project budgets.
• Handle hiring and recruitment of bridge staff.
• Communicate effectively with the public in meetings and notifications.
• Think independently and make rational decisions.
• Follow company policies and safety procedures.
• Work both independently and collaboratively.
• Participate in professional organizations and community programs.
• Travel and work overtime as needed.
• Other responsibilities as assigned.
