Job description

The location of this position is flexible and can be performed from any of our Apex offices (Fargo, Bismarck, Dickinson, ND or Detroit Lakes, St. Cloud, or Minnetonka MN) or remotely within 250 miles of an Apex office. This position is considered a strategic hire and offers an opportunity to develop a structural-bridge team by expanding Apex’s transportation capabilities to public and private clients. The person will report directly to Apex’s Transportation Sector Leader and is expected to attend key business, client, and project meetings in person, including personnel meetings if they are a direct supervisor.

Key responsibilities include:

1. Engaging in technical work and managing projects involving bridge designs and drainage structures for transportation and water resource projects.
2. Participating in the development of new opportunities, preparing technical proposals, and engaging in project pursuit activities such as interviews.
3. Collaborating with other project managers on various projects.

Qualification Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering with 10+ years of bridge engineering experience.
• Licensed as a structural engineer in the primary state of practice or able to obtain licensure within 6 months.
• Experience with transportation projects and public agencies in North Dakota and Minnesota is preferred.
• Experience with in-service bridge inspection is preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Detail-oriented, self-motivated, with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to operate a computer ergonomically.
• Work outdoors regularly.
• Lift up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 25 pounds occasionally.
• Prolonged standing and walking may be required.
• Ability to work scheduled hours.

Typical Tasks and Duties:

• Perform bridge engineering calculations, analysis, and design tasks independently.
• Write technical specifications, reports, and correspondence.
• Lead bridge design efforts as engineer-of-record.
• Review and check designs of team members.
• Mentor less experienced staff.
• Coordinate with technicians to produce engineering plans.
• Meet deadlines and project budgets.
• Employ industry design standards.
• Engage in business development and marketing activities.
• Prepare technical proposals and participate in project pursuits.
• Participate in team and management meetings.
• Assist in budget development for bridge projects.
• Hire and recruit bridge staff as needed.
• Communicate effectively with the public in various settings.
• Think independently and exercise sound judgment.
• Adhere to safety policies and company guidelines.
• Perform duties ethically and with attention to detail.
• Work independently and collaboratively.
• Participate in professional organizations and community programs.
• Travel and work overtime as necessary.
