Job summary

Uber Technologies Inc. is seeking an experienced L5 Backend Engineer on the Pricing & Incentives team in Sunnyvale, CA.

You will architect low-latency microservices and real-time decision systems that power Uber's global marketplace, collaborating across product, applied science, and operations to turn complex marketplace problems into scalable solutions. About the role and team

Engineering at Uber means building for real-world impact under real-world constraints. As a L5 Backend on the Pricing & Incentives team, you will build innovative products and scalable systems that power our global marketplace. Our systems produce real-time decision signals and sophisticated algorithms that other critical systems depend on every second. The problems here are complex, the systems are massive, and the stakes are immediate.

What you'll do

1. Requires backend expertise in low-latency microservices to architect joint optimization systems across our demand levers (TDF, TSF, HVAs, EUP). This role is necessary to unify disparate investment pipelines into a combined management system.


2. Own the software lifecycle end-to-end: from design docs through production rollout, debugging live issues, and managing incidents.


3. Collaborate across disciplines — Product, Applied Science, and Ops — to translate ambiguous marketplace problems into robust system designs.

Basic Qualifications

• 6+ years of professional experience in backend software engineering, data engineering, or a related technical role.


• Expertise in writing high-quality code to solve strategically important problems that span multiple organizations.


• Experience leading org-wide engineering projects through all lifecycle stages: inception, stakeholder engagement, implementation, and operations.


• Proven track record of overseeing incident management processes and directing on-call rotations in alignment with global best practices.


• Demonstrated ability to make sound engineering/business tradeoffs, considering long-term implications for the greater good of Uber.


• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building high-performance, scalable distributed systems at a 100M+ user scale.


• Expertise in real-time streaming frameworks (Flink, Spark) and OLAP systems (Apache Pinot, Druid) to reduce system complexity.


• Experience with Big Data/Hadoop ecosystem tools used to automate complex data orchestrations across multiple product areas.


• Advanced proficiency in SQL and data warehousing, with a demonstrated ability to identify and reconcile architectural gaps.


• Strong leadership traits: Experience serving as a representative for the organization to the broader internal and external technical community.


• Proven ability to get alignment and buy-in for large-scale technology transformations across multiple job functions.

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $202,000 per year - USD $224,000 per year.

For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $202,000 per year - USD $224,000 per year.

For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
