Job summary

Uber Technologies Inc. is seeking a Backend Engineer to scale the Marketplace Fares platform and deliver robust backend features for Uber’s global marketplace.

You will collaborate with product managers, data scientists, and operations teams to deploy highly available microservices using Go and Python. In-office presence is required for most US roles.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or a similar field.
• Strong coding/debugging abilities with Go and Python.
• 4+ years of software development experience as a backend developer.
• Proven experience building highly available distributed systems (at Uber scale) and working across multiple backend services.
• Experience working on scalable backend systems utilizing a microservices architecture.
• Background in payments/fintech engineering.

About the Role

The Marketplace Fares Team powers global fares for all of Uber - that’s all riders, drivers, eaters, new initiatives and technical consumers. Tens of billions of dollars in gross bookings flow through the systems and experiences within our responsibility. Our scope and critical work spans the entire stack - from platform fare calculation for riders and drivers, to data science prediction of trustworthy upfront prices, to compelling mobile fare experiences for our customers. Fares is a backend team with two product-centric tracks (Rider Fares & Driver Fares) and multiple platform-centric tracks (Fares Platform, Intelligence, Experiences, and Solutions). On this team, you’ll work closely with product, operations, data science, and engineering teams throughout the company.

As a backend engineer you will make an impact in the real world using exciting and new technology. You will work on a fast-paced solutions oriented marketplace team, looking to create robust and powerful features that power the critical internal configuration platform for Fares @ Uber. Your ability to work closely with other engineers, product managers, and product operations teams will bring the best experiences possible in an exciting environment.

About the Team

The Marketplace organization at Uber tackles some of the hardest quantitative problems related to improving Uber’s realtime marketplace which deeply impact the everyday experiences of our riders and driver partners. The Marketplace teams focus on building technology to achieve market balance (matching the supply of drivers with demand from riders) and optimize the reliability and availability of Uber’s trip fulfillment. We are the brain of Uber, tackling the company’s most challenging quantitative problems: optimizing Uber’s dynamic pricing system; providing real time positioning guidance to drivers; optimizing dispatches of drivers and couriers to incoming requests; matching riders together for UberPool, and many more.

What You’ll Do

As a member of the Marketplace Fares team, you will be doing just that: building out and expanding our powerful Fares backend systems to help build features and drive key new product launches at Uber.

• You will be responsible for development of our framework infrastructure to improve our ability to customize our fare configurations for every Uber business and market need.
• You will have a deep understanding of the problems our platform solves for. You will also get to work with many different parts of the company in helping drive projects that impact millions of customers.
• Participate in periodic on-call rotations and be available for critical issues.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or a similar field
• Strong coding/debugging abilities with at least one coding language. We primarily work with Go and Python.

Preferred Qualifications

• 4+ years of total software development experience as a backend developer
• Proven experience building highly available distributed systems (at Uber scale) and working across multiple backend services
• Experience working on scalable backend systems utilizing a microservices architecture
• High bar for quality as demonstrated by code reviews, documentation, unit and integration testing
• Background in payments/fintech engineering

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $171,000 per year - USD $190,000 per year.

For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $171,000 per year - USD $190,000 per year.

For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
