As a Sr. Commercial Underwriter, you will manage a book of business focusing on profitability and growth. Responsibilities include reviewing new and renewal business, assessing coverage risks, preparing quotes, and responding to coverage questions within your authority level. You will also build relationships with agents to facilitate positive business flow, working independently and exercising significant judgment. Depending on location and role requirements, this position may be hybrid or fully remote.
Accountabilities
- Deliver profitable outcomes on less complex niche business through effective risk selection, including analyzing, selecting, and pricing business with prescriptive coverage terms.
- Examine inspection reports, location, risk, financial data, and other tools to identify concerns.
- Coordinate with Risk Control for inspections and follow-ups.
- Drive corrective actions on renewal accounts.
- Escalate referrals needing higher-level review or approval.
- Ensure timely release of renewals, non-renewals, and notices to meet service and regulatory standards.
- Achieve key performance indicators for the portfolio.
- Develop and maintain relationships with distribution partners, including regular portfolio reviews and meeting customer service standards.
- Coordinate with the distribution team to build pipelines, resolve issues, and oversee change management.
- Communicate regularly with team members about agency health and market conditions.
Cultivate a High Performing Culture
- Provide superior customer service and demonstrate strong business acumen.
- Mentor support staff and support their career development.
- Review, mentor, and approve underwriting decisions for lower authority associates.
- Assist in training new hires and internal promotions.
- Perform other related work as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, or a related field preferred.
- Insurance designation (e.g., CPCU, IIA) preferred or working towards it.
- At least five years of progressive commercial underwriting experience, including 1-3 years in property and casualty insurance.
- Experience with churches or religious institutions is preferred.

Compensation
- $58,800 - $98,000 depending on experience, plus bonus eligibility.
- In CA, CT, MA, NJ, NY, and PA, salary range is $64,800 - $108,000 plus bonus eligibility.
