As a Sr. Commercial Underwriter, you are responsible for managing a book of business for profitability and growth. You will review both new and renewal business, assess risk of coverage, prepare quotes, and respond to coverage questions within your authority level. You will also build successful relationships with agents to increase positive business flow. This role requires working under limited supervision and exercising significant independent judgment. Depending on location and role requirements, this position will be hybrid or remote.
Accountabilities
- Deliver profitable outcomes on less complex niche business through effective risk selection, including analyzing, selecting, and pricing business with prescriptive coverage terms.
- Examine inspection reports, location, risk, financial data, and other tools to identify concerns.
- Coordinate with Risk Control for inspections and follow-ups.
- Drive corrective actions or remediation strategies on renewal accounts.
- Escalate referrals needing higher-level review or approval.
- Ensure timely release of renewals, non-renewals, and notices to adhere to service and regulatory standards.
- Achieve key performance indicators for the portfolio.
- Develop and maintain relationships with distribution partners through regular portfolio reviews and communication.
- Coordinate with the distribution team to build pipelines, resolve issues, and manage change.
- Communicate regularly with team members on agency health and market conditions.
Additional Responsibilities
- Mentor support staff and support employee development.
- Review and approve referrals for lower authority associates.
- Conduct peer audits and approve underwriting decisions (LOAs).
- Assist in training new hires and internal promotions.
- Perform other related work as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or related field preferred.
- Insurance designation (CPCU, IIA, etc.) preferred or in progress.
- At least five years of experience in commercial underwriting, including 1-3 years in property and casualty insurance.
- Experience writing business for churches or religious institutions is preferred.

Compensation
- $58,800 - $98,000 plus bonus, commensurate with experience.
- In certain states (CA, CT, MA, NJ, NY, PA), $64,800 - $108,000 plus bonus.
