Position Summary
The Sr. Radiation Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting and monitoring City of Hope Orange
County, Radiation Safety practices, policies, and procedures, to meet regulatory and other applicable
requirements. Reviews and oversees radiation installations to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, subject to the supervision of the Radiation Safety Officer. Evaluates the physical environment by conducting inspections to identify unsafe hazards or conditions and implements actions and safeguards as warranted. The Sr. Radiation Safety Specialist will act as a proactive consultant to City of Hope Orange County Lennar Foundation Cancer Center and regional network sites
Key Responsibilities include:
  • Performs inspections of ionizing radiation exposure within laboratories using radioactive materials.
  • Prepares monthly and quarterly dosimetry reports.
  • Responsible for managing external dosimetry program, which includes monitoring and maintaining employee's radiation exposure records.
  • Perform inspection and calibration of field and laboratory health physics instrumentation and personal dosimeters.
  • Investigates accidental overexposure and write incident reports.
  • Responds to radiation emergencies at any time and completes documentation and write incident reports.
  • Responsible for performing assigned inspections and calibrations.
  • Supervises the sealed source program, which includes leak testing and inventory of all sealed radioactive services.
  • Performs record keeping activities associated with radiation surveys, inspections, waste disposal, and isotope inventory, leak tests and personal monitoring.
  • Responding to radioactive spills or contaminations and performing decontamination procedures.
  • Monitors patients receiving therapy level doses of radiopharmaceuticals (e.g. Iodine-131, Yitrium-90, Lu-177), and oversees the decontamination of rooms housing these patients.
  • Assist with review of surveys of "hot" labs in Radiation Physics and Nuclear Medicine Departments.
  • Manages Receiving, processing and documentation of all packages of RAM received by the Radiation Safety Office.
  • Assist in writing and revising current SOPs and policies.
  • Processes radioactive waste for disposal.
  • Support inventory and management of radioactive waste program.
  • Manages and orders supplies for the radiation safety division.
  • Manage the radiation safety annual refresher training assignments.
Follows established City of Hope and department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement, attendance, safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines, including adherence to the workplace Code of Conduct and Compliance Plan. Practices a high level of integrity and honesty in maintaining confidentiality.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physical, Biological Sciences or Engineering.
  • 5 years of related experience in operational health physics
