Description

Under the direction of the Associate Radiation Safety Officer, UCLA Health is seeking a Senior Radiation Safety Specialist to support our Westwood, West Valley, and Santa Monica Medical Centers, as well as the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital.


In this critical role, you will serve as a subject matter expert on radiation safety for UCLA Health and EHS professionals. Your responsibilities will include monitoring the use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment such as lasers and MRI machines, conducting routine audits of laboratories, nuclear medicine, and radiation oncology departments, and implementing our dosimetry program. You will also lead radiation safety training sessions and assist medical staff in the therapeutic use of sealed and unsealed radioactive materials.


This position ensures compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations governing the use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment.


Key Responsibilities:




  • Conduct audits of radiation use areas to ensure safety and regulatory compliance




  • Oversee dosimetry program and ensure accurate exposure monitoring




  • Facilitate and deliver training for staff on radiation safety practices




  • Provide support during therapeutic procedures involving radioactive materials




  • Collaborate with departments using lasers, MRIs, and other radiation equipment




  • Maintain documentation and reports in accordance with regulatory requirements

Salary Range: $76,200-158,800/year

QualificationsRequired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of healthcare-related radiation safety policies and procedures
  • Bachelor's degree in Health & Safety, Engineering, Public Health, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • General understanding of radiation safety equipment used in hospitals and healthcare settings
  • Working knowledge of radiation safety regulations, including Title 17 (CA Code of Regulations) and Titles 10, 21, and 49 (Code of Federal Regulations)
  • Deep understanding of hospital operations and their intersection with regulatory compliance
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Advanced interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to interpret national and state laws and safety codes
  • Familiarity with Medical Center safety policies and Joint Commission standards
  • Ability to lead engaging training and education sessions
  • Strong collaboration skills with staff, leadership, and regulatory agencies
  • Confident public speaking and presentation abilities
  • Strong writing skills for reports, policies, and documentation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access), Storyline 360, email systems, and databases
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certification in health & safety or related field
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting
  • Valid California driver's license within 3 months of hire and enrollment in the DMV Pull Notice Program
Special Requirements:
  • Must be able to work variable shifts including evenings and nights
  • Occasional overtime required
  • Must wear appropriate safety equipment when needed
  • Participation in medical monitoring program required
