Role

Responsible for interpreting, organizing, and executing the conceptual design of projects. Uses creativity, foresight, and judgment to meet project requirements and objectives.

Responsibilities
  1. Lead design efforts through all project phases.
  2. Conduct programming, space planning, layout, and coordinate furnishings, lighting, and colors.
  3. Develop innovative, practical, aesthetic, safe, and functional design concepts aligned with client goals and budgets.
  4. Prepare and update documentation during schematic, design development, and construction phases.
  5. Coordinate color and material palettes.
  6. Select and specify furniture, lighting, flooring, wall coverings, and artwork; estimate material requirements and costs.
  7. Integrate sustainable design solutions into projects.
  8. Render conceptual ideas and prepare 2D/3D presentation drawings.
  9. Conduct client presentations.
  10. Assist project team with subcontracting, fabrication, and installation of materials and furnishings.
  11. Maintain project schedules and positive client relationships, providing regular updates.
  12. Communicate effectively with disciplines, vendors, and contractors to incorporate all project information.
  13. Support construction administration, responding to RFIs, COs, and reviewing shop drawings.
  14. Apply HOK standards across projects and processes.
  15. Support team members with interior design expertise and mentor less experienced staff.
  16. Participate in recruiting and staff evaluations.
  17. Promote a green workplace and foster client service excellence.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, interior design, or equivalent.
  • 7+ years of experience in interior workplace projects.
  • Project size experience of 30,000 SF+.
  • Licensed Interior Designer (NCIDQ) or registered Architect; NCARB registration preferred.
  • LEED credential within 12 months of employment.
Skills & Competencies
  • Creative talent in conceptual design and rendering, both hand and digital.
  • Knowledge of current design trends, construction methods, materials, and manufacturer-supplier relationships.
  • Expertise in FFE, finishes, lighting, signage, art, and color schemes.
  • Understanding of building codes and safety regulations.
  • Proficiency in technical design tools and software including Revit, MS Office, Adobe Suite, SketchUp, and Deltek Vision.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and deadline management skills.

  • Willingness to travel and work overtime as needed.
  • Flexible to changes in job duties and requirements.
  • Salary range in Washington D.C.: $95,000-$120,000, based on experience and qualifications.
