Job summary

Northrop Grumman is seeking a Sr. Principal Flight Avionics Responsible Engineer in Melbourne, FL to lead avionics integration, certification, and system safety efforts for flight deck systems.

You will drive supplier management and verification activities across FMS, FMCs, PFDs, TAWS, CAS and related avionics components. The role demands a strong background in MIL-STD interfaces, DO-254/200/160 and RTCA standards, plus hands-on leadership to advance major flight deck projects and integration

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM with 8 years’ related engineering experience OR Master’s with 6 years OR PhD with 4 years.
  • Active DoD Top Secret clearance and ability to maintain clearance.
  • Experience with MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429 and Ethernet protocols.
  • Experience with avionics supplier management.
  • Experience with flight certification standards (PBN, RNAV, RNP, CNS/ATM, DO-178/254/200/160).
  • Experience with system modeling and requirements tools (Cameo, DOORS, Rhapsody).
  • Experience with requirements development, tracing, and trade studies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide avionics integration engineering support for flight deck systems and components (FMS, FMCs, PFDs, TAWS, CAS, Moving Maps).
  • Lead preparation and support of verification of avionics installations and certification documents.
  • Provide expert leadership in avionics flight management integration and system safety documents.
  • Lead the integration of flight deck systems with mission systems.
  • Create aircraft system schematics and air vehicle wiring diagrams.
  • Manage suppliers, review design data, define test requirements and support testing.
  • Informal and formal testing of subsystem requirements in lab and troubleshoot hardware.
  • Support flight test activities, post-flight data analysis, and resolution of anomalies.

Northrop Grumman’s Aeronautics Systems sector is seeking a Sr. Principal Flight Avionics Responsible Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals in defining the future. This onsite position is in Melbourne, FL.

The Senior Principal Engineer Electronics will be responsible for developing and executing the program. This person will serve as a senior engineer, supporting Avionics Integration of Aircraft flight deck Systems.

This person will be responsible for one or more of the following:

  • Provide Avionics Integration engineering support for the integration of aircraft flight deck systems and components including Flight Management Systems (FMS), Flight Management Computers (FMCs), Primary Flight Displays (PFDs), Terrain Avoidance and Warning Systems (TAWS), Crew Alerting System (CAS), Moving Maps, and other various avionics systems.

  • Lead in the preparation and support the verification of aircraft avionics and Prime Mission Equipment installations and aircraft certification documents.

  • Provides Critical Skills to teams with internal and external knowledge of the technical industry and how it impacts the company. Serves as an expert for Avionics Flight Management Integration.

  • Lead support for the development of system safety documents.

  • Lead the integration of flight deck systems with mission systems.

  • Create aircraft system schematics to support air vehicle wiring diagrams.

  • Requirements development and analysis and supporting trade studies.

  • Manage suppliers, review and analysis of supplier design data, definition of functional test requirements including acceptance, qualification, and system integration, and support test execution.

  • Informal and formal testing of subsystem requirements in lab, troubleshooting hardware in the lab.

  • Supporting flight test activities and post flight data analysis, and resolution of flight test anomalies.

A successful Flight Avionics Engineer has good leadership skills and understands the scope of the work and the impact of the work on other teams. This individual consistently brings up concerns, issues and risks, and holds themselves to a high level of technical rigor.

Basic Qualifications:

Sr. Principal Flight Avionics Responsible Engineer:

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline from an accredited university AND 8 years of related professional/military experience in Engineering; OR a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited university AND 6 years of related professional/military experience in Engineering; or a Ph.D. AND 4 years of related professional/military experience in Engineering.

  • Active DoD Top Secret Clearance, and ability to maintain required clearance.

  • Experience with MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429 and Ethernet communication protocols

  • Experience with Supplier Management of avionics equipment

  • Experience with at least one of the flight certification standards listed in the preferred qualifications (PBN, RNAV, RNP, CNS/ATM, DO-178/254/200/160)

  • Experience with system modeling and requirements management tools (Cameo, DOORS, Rhapsody, etc.), developing/maturing requirements, and tracing requirements through various levels

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Communication, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) experience

  • Performance Based Navigation (PBN) experience and attaining PBN certification

  • Required Navigation Performance (RNP)/ Area Navigation (RNAV) certification experience

  • Experience designing to RTCA DO-254 hardware standard for airborne electronic systems

  • Experience designing to RTCA DO-200 standard for processing aeronautical data

  • Experience designing to RTCA DO-160 and MIL-STD-810 standards for environmental qualifications

  • Experience with Earned Value Management

Primary Level Salary Range: $122,800.00 - $184,200.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
