Job Overview

Northrop Grumman’s Aeronautics Systems sector seeks a Senior Principal Flight Avionics Responsible Engineer to design, develop, and execute the program, serving as a senior engineer supporting Avionics Integration of aircraft flight deck systems.

Responsibilities
  • Provide Avionics Integration engineering support for the integration of aircraft flight deck systems and components including Flight Management Systems (FMS), Flight Management Computers (FMCs), Primary Flight Displays (PFDs), Terrain Avoidance and Warning Systems (TAWS), Crew Alerting System (CAS), Moving Maps, and other avionics systems.
  • Lead the preparation and support verification of aircraft avionics and Prime Mission Equipment installations and aircraft certification documents.
  • Provide critical skills and internal/external knowledge of the technical industry to teams.
  • Serve as an expert for Avionics Flight Management integration.
  • Lead support for the development of system safety documents.
  • Lead the integration of flight deck systems with mission systems.
  • Create aircraft system schematics to support air vehicle wiring diagrams.
  • Develop requirements and perform analysis and support trade studies.
  • Manage suppliers, review and analyze supplier design data, define functional test requirements (acceptance, qualification, system integration), and support test execution.
  • Conduct informal and formal testing of subsystem requirements in lab, troubleshoot hardware in lab.
  • Support flight test activities and post‑flight data analysis; resolve flight test anomalies.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills and high technical rigor across teams.
Basic Qualifications
  • bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited university and 8 years of related professional/military engineering experience.
  • or master’s degree in a STEM discipline from an accredited university and 6 years of related professional/military engineering experience.
  • or Ph.D. and 4 years of related professional/military engineering experience.
  • active DoD Top Secret clearance and ability to maintain it.
  • experience with MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429 and Ethernet communication protocols.
  • experience with supplier management of avionics equipment.
  • experience with at least one of the flight certification standards listed (PBN, RNAV, RNP, CNS/ATM, DO-178/254/200/160).
  • experience with system modeling and requirements management tools such as Cameo, DOORS, Rhapsody, etc.; developing and maturing requirements and tracing them through levels.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Performance Based Navigation (PBN) experience and attaining PBN certification.
  • Required Navigation Performance (RNP)/Area Navigation (RNAV) certification experience.
  • experience designing to RTCA DO-254 hardware standard for airborne electronic systems.
  • experience designing to RTCA DO-200 standard for processing aeronautical data.
  • experience designing to RTCA DO-160 and MIL-STD-810 standards for environmental qualifications.
  • experience with Earned Value Management, Confluence and Jira.
Salary

Primary level salary range: $122,800.00 – $184,200.00. Base salary may vary based on scope, responsibilities, experience, education, skills, and market conditions. Employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, discretionary bonuses, and, for certain positions, long‑term incentives.
