Job summary

RigUp is seeking a Senior Electrical Designer to deliver advanced electrical design and drafting for major industrial projects. You will lead project execution, direct junior staff, and ensure compliance with client specs and industry standards during detailed design reviews.

Responsibilities include overseeing HV/LV installations, producing detailed drawings, and performing complex calculations. Travel to field sites and client meetings is expected as part of the role.

Qualifications

• Two- to three-year post-secondary technical diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or a closely related discipline.
• Extensive professional experience in industrial electrical design and drafting.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and MicroStation design software platforms.
• Specialized expertise in SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL), SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI), and 3D modeling platforms such as SP3D.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and oversee comprehensive electrical design packages including layouts, plans, sections, elevations, and installation details.
• Direct project execution activities and supervise discipline design teams for large or multiple projects.
• Lead the technical design and drafting of HV and LV electrical installations.
• Coordinate junior designers and ensure alignment with client specs and schedules.
• Develop detailed drawings including SLDs, wiring schematics, panel layouts, lighting and earthing systems.
• Perform complex engineering calculations for cable sizing, ductbank sizing, and lighting calculations.
• Conduct QA and participate in design reviews with clients.

Job description

The Senior Electrical Designer is responsible for delivering advanced electrical design and drafting services, providing technical leadership, and directing project execution activities for major industrial projects. This role ensures all electrical design deliverables strictly adhere to internal procedures, client specifications, and industry standards. Working with minimal supervision, the successful candidate will oversee project teams, perform complex technical calculations, direct junior team members, and interface with clients during detailed design reviews.

Core Responsibilities

• Execute and oversee the preparation of comprehensive electrical design packages, including layouts, plans, sections, elevations, and installation details derived from reference drawings and specifications.
• Direct project execution activities and supervise discipline design teams for single large-scale or multiple parallel smaller projects.
• Lead the technical design and drafting of high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) electrical installations.
• Direct the work of junior designers and coordinate work-sharing initiatives to ensure strict alignment with client specifications and project schedules.
• Develop detailed engineering drawings, including HV/LV single-line diagrams, wiring and control schematics, AC/DC distribution panel layouts, lighting systems, earthing systems, substation/switchyard layouts, and underground/above-grade cable routing.
• Perform complex engineering and dimensional calculations, including cable tray sizing, cable pulling calculations, cable selection and sizing, ductbank sizing, and photometric lighting calculations.
• Perform comprehensive point-to-point reviews on complete electrical design packages to maintain quality assurance.
• Conduct field site visits to perform panel audits, raceway routing walkdowns, and existing condition verifications.
• Participate in formal design reviews with client representatives to advise on technical design, drafting compliance, and engineering resolutions.
• Maintain strict adherence to organizational Quality Assurance systems, guidelines, and document control procedures.

Required Qualifications

• Two- to three-year post-secondary technical diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or a closely related discipline.

• Proven track record of managing project work scopes successfully within established time, budget, and quality parameters.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and MicroStation design software platforms.
• Specialized expertise in SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL), SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI), and 3D modeling platforms such as SmartPlant 3D (SP3D).
• Strong working knowledge of established electrical drafting techniques, standards, and practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proficiency with AVEVA E3D design software.
• Experience utilizing AGI32 or equivalent software for industrial lighting calculations.
• Equivalent combination of advanced formal education, specialized technical training, and extensive field experience in electrical design and drafting.
• Location: Primary Office / Field Site Visits as required
