Job summary

Job description

Job Summary

The Senior Payroll Manager plays a critical role in ensuring accurate, timely and compliant payroll operations across a complex, multi-entity healthcare organization. This role partners closely with Accounting, HR and Finance and serves as a subject-matter expert for Workday Payroll, driving operational excellence and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities
  • Lead end-to-end payroll processing for 26+ legal entities across multiple states.
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of hourly, salaried, and off-cycle payrolls.
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local wage, tax, and reporting requirements.
  • Act as the escalation point for complex payroll issues and corrections.
  • Manage payroll operations within Workday Payroll, including configuration, audits, and testing.
  • Partner with HR to ensure data integrity across Workday Payroll, Time & Attendance, and employee records.
  • Lead payroll-related system enhancements, upgrades, and automation initiatives.
  • Perform regular payroll related audits.
  • Record payroll activity in the general ledger and reconcile payroll-related accounts.
  • Manage labor cost allocations and support month-end close activities.
  • Partner with Accounting on accruals, reconciliations, and wage and salary variance analysis.
  • Support internal and external audits, including payroll and 401(k).
  • Oversee payroll-related benefits processing.
  • Support annual compliance testing and required retirement plan reporting.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop payroll staff, as applicable.
  • Provide high-level customer service to leaders and employees regarding payroll matters.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Finance, HR, Legal, and Operations on policy and regulatory changes.
  • Evaluate and streamline payroll processes and internal controls.
  • Develop, maintain, and document payroll procedures and best practices.
Qualifications & Experience
  • 7+ years of progressive payroll experience, including multi-entity and multi-state payroll.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Workday Payroll required.
  • Healthcare industry experience preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of payroll tax, wage and hour laws, and compliance.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with general ledger systems.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive information with a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
Compensation & Benefits
