Job Summary

The Senior Field Training Officer must respond in a helpful and considerate manner to the needs of patients, family members, other health care providers, public safety and law enforcement personnel, EMS students, volunteers and fellow employees.

Reports to: Educator, EMS

Job Specific Responsibilities
  1. Safely and expeditiously responds to the scene of the request for EMS assistance.
  2. Evaluates the patient(s), communicates the patient’s illness or injury according to established medical protocols and pre-hospital standards of care.
  3. Ensures that all equipment and supplies are present and in working order at the assigned station and/or EMS vehicle.
  4. The Senior Field Training Officer will be responsible for recognizing and identifying patient care efficiencies or deficiencies, professional performance, and departmental protocols which fail to conform to the established standards of the EMS department by evaluating employees several times a year.
  5. The Senior Field Training Officer will assist in the training of new employees by evaluating their performance and assisting with annual evaluations.
  6. The Senior FTO will maintain their assigned personnel’s certifications, licenses, continuing education hours, in-service dates, and will notify the employee and their direct supervisor of expiration dates.
  7. The Senior FTO will be responsible for their shift’s continuing education hours and will assist in developing continuing education units that will be presented after monthly case reviews.
  8. The Senior FTO will be responsible for quality improvement reviews as directed.
  9. Through attitude, behavior, courtesy and respect shown to others; is recognized as a Leader of UMC EMS.
  10. All other assigned duties related to EMS.
Education and Experience
  1. High School Diploma or GED
Required Licensures/Certifications/Registrations
  1. Texas Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic certification
  2. BLS: Basic Life Support certification by The American Heart Association
  3. ACLS: Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification by The American Heart Association
  4. Class C driver license with no DWI convictions in the prior 10 years
Skills and Abilities
  1. Practical knowledge of medicolegal aspects of pre-hospital patient care is essential
  2. Basic medical terminology and pre-hospital patient care skills
  3. Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing; Must speak English fluently
  4. Knowledge of the Lubbock geographical areas or the ability to effectively read GPS coordinates
Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships

This position will interact with patients, their family members, health care providers, members of public safety and law enforcement personnel, students, volunteers, and fellow employees.

Physical Capabilities

Frequently exerts a medium amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull and move patients or objects. Frequently work involves standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching and kneeling. Occasionally work involves sitting, running, climbing stairs, climbing ladders and crawling.

Environmental/Working Conditions

Emergency Medical Services provides crew quarters which are well lighted and ventilated. This position is subject to adverse weather and working conditions. The paramedic is frequently exposed to blood, and other infectious agents. Occasionally work involves the paramedic to be outdoors, in confined spaces, heights, underground, wet, and dry environment with a wide range of temperatures. Frequently work involves a noisy environment, and unusual lighting.
