Job description

Position Summary

The Senior Operations Manager is responsible for leading the overall operational performance of the Mansfield branch, including warehouse, yard, transportation, logistics, inventory, safety, labor management, and cost control.

Mansfield is a top-five location within Specialty Building Products and serves customers across all of New England, making this a highly visible and operationally significant role within the Northeast region.

This role will lead operational leadership while maintaining a high-level view of the operation as a whole. The Senior Operations Manager is expected to look beyond day-to-day issues, evaluate how the branch is operating from a broader perspective, identify gaps and inefficiencies, and develop scalable processes that support continued growth.

As the branch grows and evolves, this position will be responsible for identifying where procedures, structure, or accountability may be lacking and implementing sustainable processes where they do not currently exist. The ideal candidate will be able to step back from day-to-day activity, assess the operation, identify opportunities for improvement, and translate business needs into practical, scalable procedures that can be implemented through the leadership team.

This position serves as a key operational partner to the Branch Manager and is expected to create greater consistency, accountability, efficiency, and operational discipline across the branch.

Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
  • Lead and support operations managers, supervisors, and leads in the day-to-day execution of branch operations.
  • Establish clear expectations and accountability around safety, productivity, accuracy, service, staffing, and cost control.
  • Provide direction and support to operational leadership while allowing managers and supervisors to effectively lead their teams.
  • Evaluate staffing structure, responsibilities, and leadership coverage as operational needs evolve.
  • Support succession planning and development of key operational talent.
  • Promote consistency, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement across the operation.
Strategic Operations & Process Improvement
  • Maintain a broad view of branch operations and evaluate how warehouse, yard, transportation, logistics, and inventory functions work together.
  • Identify operational gaps, inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and areas where processes or procedures are unclear or do not exist.
  • Develop, document, and implement scalable operating procedures to improve consistency, efficiency, accountability, and service.
  • Evaluate existing processes and determine where changes are needed to support current operations and future branch growth.
  • Identify root causes of recurring operational issues and implement solutions designed to prevent repeat problems.
  • Standardize processes across receiving, storage, picking, staging, loading, routing, delivery, returns, and inventory management.
  • Lead operational improvement initiatives from identification through implementation and follow-up.
  • Ensure new processes are clearly communicated, understood, adopted, and sustained by operational leadership.
  • Use operational data and performance trends to identify opportunities for improvement and measure results.
Operations & Logistics
  • Oversee warehouse, yard, transportation, logistics, and inventory operations to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient execution.
  • Monitor productivity, labor utilization, overtime, inventory accuracy, freight costs, damage, shrink, service levels, and other key operational measures.
  • Partner with operational leaders to improve workflow, staffing, equipment utilization, product flow, and space utilization.
  • Improve routing, delivery performance, fleet utilization, backhaul opportunities, and freight efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, company safety policies, required training, and operational procedures.
  • Review significant operational incidents, identify root causes, and ensure corrective actions are implemented and sustained.
Financial & Operational Performance
  • Partner with the Branch Manager in reviewing operational and financial performance.
  • Assist with development and management of operating budgets, forecasts, labor plans, and operating expenses.
  • Review P&L and operational results to identify trends, risks, and opportunities related to labor, freight, inventory, damage, shrink, fuel, and overhead.
  • Develop and implement action plans to improve productivity, cost control, service, and overall branch profitability.
  • Evaluate staffing and labor needs based on business volume, productivity, and branch growth.
  • Support capital planning, equipment needs, facility improvements, and other operational investments.
Qualifications
Required
  • 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in operations, distribution, warehouse, logistics, supply chain, or a related environment.
  • 3+ years of experience leading managers, supervisors, or other operational leaders.

  • Experience leading warehouse and logistics teams of comparable size and operational complexity.
