Job description

The Assistant Branch Manager partners with the Branch Manager in leading the overall performance of the Mansfield branch, with involvement across operations, logistics, sales, customer service, financial performance, and team leadership.

This role helps ensure the branch operates safely, efficiently, and profitably while delivering a high level of service to customers. The Assistant Branch Manager works cross-functionally with operations, sales, administrative, and support teams to drive performance, develop employees, improve processes, control costs, support revenue growth, and achieve branch goals.

The position may assume responsibility for branch operations in the Branch Manager's absence.

Key Responsibilities
Branch Leadership & Team Development
  • Partner with the Branch Manager in the day-to-day leadership and overall management of the branch.
  • Lead, coach, and develop the inside sales team members as appropriate.
  • Establish clear expectations and accountability for safety, service, productivity, sales performance, accuracy, and cost control.
  • Support staffing, scheduling, cross-training, succession planning, and employee development across branch functions.
  • Promote a culture of ownership, teamwork, accountability, customer service, and continuous improvement.
  • Assist managers and supervisors with performance management, employee development, and resolution of day-to-day employee concerns.
Operations & Logistics
  • Support warehouse, yard, transportation, and logistics operations to ensure safe, accurate, and efficient execution.
  • Monitor productivity, labor utilization, overtime, inventory accuracy, service levels, freight costs, damage, shrink, and other operational measures.
  • Identify operational challenges, determine root causes, and implement sustainable improvements.
  • Improve processes across receiving, storage, picking, staging, loading, routing, delivery, and returns.
  • Support effective warehouse and yard layout, product flow, equipment utilization, and space management.
  • Partner with logistics leadership to improve routing, delivery performance, fleet utilization, backhaul opportunities, and outsourced freight costs.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, company safety policies, required training, and operational procedures.
  • Review operational incidents and ensure corrective actions are identified and completed.
  • Partner with sales leadership and the Branch Manager to support branch sales objectives and revenue growth.
  • Build strong relationships with customers and assist in resolving escalated service, delivery, product, or account concerns.
  • Support coordination between inside sales, outside sales, operations, purchasing, and logistics to improve the customer experience.
  • Review customer needs, service expectations, order trends, and operational capabilities to identify opportunities for improvement and growth.
  • Participate in customer meetings, account discussions, and branch sales initiatives as needed.
  • Help ensure operational decisions support customer retention, service levels, and profitable sales growth.
  • Support sales teams in identifying and resolving operational barriers that may impact customer relationships or revenue opportunities.
Financial & Business Performance
  • Partner with the Branch Manager in reviewing branch financial and operational performance.
  • Assist with development and management of branch budgets, forecasts, and operating plans.
  • Review P&L performance and help identify trends, risks, and opportunities related to revenue, gross margin, labor, freight, inventory, damage, shrink, fuel, and overhead expenses.
  • Develop and support action plans to improve profitability and address unfavorable financial or operational trends.
  • Monitor labor plans and staffing levels to balance customer demand, productivity, service, and cost.
  • Support inventory management efforts to improve accuracy, reduce excess or obsolete inventory, and minimize shrink.
  • Evaluate business decisions with consideration for both customer impact and financial performance.
  • Assist with capital planning, equipment needs, facility improvements, and other branch investments as appropriate.
Business Planning & Continuous Improvement
  • Partner with branch leadership to establish short- and long-term goals for operational performance, customer service, sales growth, and profitability.
  • Use branch data and performance metrics to identify opportunities and drive decision-making.
  • Lead or support cross-functional projects designed to improve efficiency, service, profitability, and employee engagement.
  • Help ensure consistent communication and coordination between branch departments.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed to support the overall success of the branch.
Qualifications
Required

  • Strong business judgment and ability to balance customer service, operational needs, employee considerations, and financial performance.
  • Strong leadership, communication, critical-thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across sales, operations, logistics, administrative, and support functions.
Preferred
  • Experience within lumber, engineered wood products, roofing, siding, millwork, or another building-materials distribution environment.
  • Experience supporting or leading both sales and operational functions.
  • Experience reviewing branch-level P&L statements, budgets, forecasts, and operating metrics.
  • Experience leading teams of comparable size and operational complexity.
  • Demonstrated success improving customer service, employee performance, operational efficiency, revenue, and profitability.

Starting Pay Rate - $110k base salary plus bonus opportunity.
