Job summary

The Planet Group is seeking a Sr. Mechanical HVAC Engineer to lead mechanical and process design for industrial projects.

You will coordinate with multi-discipline teams, perform engineering calculations, and develop solutions for HVAC and mechanical utility systems. Responsibilities include creating designs with AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks, supporting field activities, and ensuring on-schedule delivery.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent from an accredited university.
• PE license required.
• 10+ years of mechanical/process engineering design experience.
• Experience in A/E industry supporting specialty chemicals, heavy industrial, manufacturing.
• Experience with industrial HVAC projects strongly preferred.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit, Navisworks or similar tools.
• Strong understanding of mechanical utility and HVAC systems.
• Ability to travel to client sites as required.

Responsibilities

• Design mechanical and process systems from simple to complex.
• Coordinate with engineering teams and other disciplines.
• Develop solutions for mechanical utility systems (chilled water, cooling tower water, heating water, steam, compressed air, natural gas, water).
• Perform HVAC load and pressure-drop calculations.
• Develop and coordinate designs using AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks.
• Support multi-office projects and manage project workflow.
• Lead engineers, designers, and drafters to keep schedules.
• Collaborate with clients, vendors, contractors, and stakeholders.
• Manage scope changes and identify risks; assist contingency planning.
• Travel to client sites and perform field verification during construction.

Location: Greer, SC preferred; open to Augusta, GA, Knoxville, TN, or Pittsburgh, PA. Pay Range: $60 - $65/hour. Work Hours: Core hours are 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Monday-Thursday and 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM Friday. Flexible schedules are available. Type of Employment: Contract to Hire - 6 months. Benefits: Competitive Benefits Package for direct hire. Hybrid schedule available for direct employees with 2 days per week remote.

Job Description

The Sr. Mechanical HVAC Engineer will perform a variety of mechanical and process engineering work during the planning and design phases of industrial projects. This position will develop engineering solutions for mechanical utility and HVAC systems while coordinating with multidisciplinary design teams, clients, vendors, and contractors. The engineer will support projects ranging from simple to complex and will be responsible for developing design solutions, performing engineering calculations, coordinating project workflow, managing scope changes, identifying project risks, and supporting construction activities.

Job Responsibilities

• Design mechanical and process systems ranging from simple to complex.
• Coordinate with mechanical/process engineering teams and other design disciplines.
• Develop design solutions for mechanical utility systems, including:
  • Chilled water
  • Cooling tower water
  • Heating water
  • Steam and condensate
  • Compressed air
  • Natural gas
  • Water systems
• Perform and validate mechanical calculations, including HVAC load calculations and air/water pressure-drop calculations.
• Develop and coordinate integrated designs using AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks.
• Support work delivered from multiple office locations.
• Direct project workflow for engineers, designers, and drafters to ensure projects remain on schedule.
• Interact and collaborate with clients, vendors, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
• Manage changes in project scope and identify potential project risks.
• Work with Discipline Managers and Project Managers to develop contingency plans.
• Participate in construction-phase services, including field verification, site observations, RFI responses, and submittal reviews.
• Travel to client sites as required.
• Work safely at industrial facilities, including climbing elevated platforms using plant stairs and ladders when required.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent degree from an accredited university.
• Professional Engineering (PE) license required.
• 10+ years of mechanical/process engineering design experience.
• Experience working in the A/E industry supporting projects in:
  • Specialty chemicals
  • Heavy industrial
  • Manufacturing
• Demonstrated experience with industrial HVAC projects strongly preferred.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and Revit.
• Experience coordinating integrated designs using Navisworks or similar coordination tools.
• Strong understanding of mechanical utility and HVAC systems.
• Experience with mechanical calculations, including HVAC loads and air/water pressure drops.
• Ability to coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering and design teams.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills with clients, vendors, contractors, and internal teams.
• Ability to manage project scope changes, identify risks, and support contingency planning.
• Ability to travel to client sites as required.
• Ability and willingness to climb elevated platforms using plant stairs and ladders at industrial client sites.
