Job summary

Actalent in La Grange, IL is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer for a contract-to-hire role focused on design of machine components and tooling, with responsibility for drawings and documentation.

You will collaborate across Engineering and Manufacturing, present designs in design reviews, support cost-reduction efforts, and ensure on-site work three days per week.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of mechanical design experience in OEM or capital equipment.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Experience using Creo/Pro-E; FEA in Creo is advantageous.
  • Experience checking mechanical drawings with GD&T.
  • Experience documenting engineering calculations and design changes.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain records per design, release and revision processes.
  • Support Manufacturing during build and document as-built changes.
  • Support machine manual generation by identifying spare parts.
  • Review products and suggest cost reductions for new/existing designs.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Design machine components and tooling with proper mechanical fit and tolerance based on customer specifications.

  • Work with external vendors to specify commercially available parts and supplement custom designs.

  • Clearly document engineering calculations and decisions, referencing existing designs when applicable.

  • Coordinate relevant work with the Applications, Electrical, Software, Process, and Manufacturing departments.

  • Present finalized mechanical designs to customers during formal design reviews.

  • Create technical drawings in the appropriate style for fabrication and assembly.

  • Check the work of other Mechanical Engineers prior to release for manufacture.

  • Maintain engineering records in accordance with design, release, and revision processes.

  • Support Manufacturing throughout the build process and document the as-built changes.

  • Support machine manual generation by identifying spare parts and communicating design intent.

  • Continuously review products and suggest cost reductions for new and existing designs.

  • Respond to customer and/or fabricator questions when applicable.

Essential Skills
  • 5+ years of mechanical design experience, specifically in OEM or capital equipment.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering OR an additional 5 years of relevant experience.

  • Experience using Creo/Pro-E modeling software; experience with FEA in Creo is advantageous.

  • Experience checking mechanical drawings with advanced GD&T.

  • Experience documenting engineering calculations and design changes for future reference and presentation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in cost reduction activities, such as Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).

  • Proficiency in MS Office, Creo/Pro-E, and WindChill PLM.

Work Environment

The position is primarily based in an office setting or designated administrative area, with occasional visits to customer facilities, vendor facilities, and trade shows/conferences. Frequent movement through industrial or manufacturing areas is required, along with the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to established safety policies. Applicants must be able to work on-site a minimum of 3 days per week.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of La Grange, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $48.07 - $60.09/hr.
