Job description

Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join us as a Senior Manager of Finance!


About the role


We are seeking aSenior Manager of Financeto lead and enhance Symetra's annual financial planning process for retirement, benefits, and life products. This individual will oversee the full planning lifecycle-from strategy and set up to execution and communication-with a strong focus on modernization, cross-functional collaboration, and clear executive deliverables.


The ideal candidate brings financial leadership experience, a passion for process improvement, and strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills. This individual contributor role reports through the company's corporate actuary. You'll work closely with actuarial, finance, reinsurance, and investment teams, and you'll serve as the default presenter for executive-level planning deliverables.


What you will do



  • Own the Financial Planning Process: Lead the end-to-end planning cycle including kick-off, assumption reviews, deliverables, and executive updates. Maintain and improve documentation and planning tools.

  • Oversee Plan Consolidations: Coordinate the development and roll-forward of plan files, run consolidations, and prepare core metrics such as operating income projections, capital ratios, and cost of financing.

  • Drive Executive Communication: Prepare Board and senior management materials, plan estimates, and divisional templates. Present to executives and serve as the point person for summarizing division-level financials, key goal indictors, and insights.

  • Enhance Process & Tools: Collaborate with actuarial modeling and finance to identify and solve bottlenecks in actual-to-plan comparisons. Support future-state integration and planning automation.

  • Coordinate with Business Partners: Work with AVP Actuary and other leaders to oversee the corporate and surplus planning files, insurance premium estimates, and Sumitomo deliverables (e.g., KGIs, Core Business Profit).

  • Lead Key Planning Meetings: Facilitate plan review meetings with the CFO/CEO, weekly check-ins, and annual kick-off. Manage admin and individual contributor support as needed

  • Ad hoc requests and projects

Compensation


Salary Range: $125,000 - $208,400 plus eligibility for the company annual bonus program.


Who You Are:



  • High School Diploma required, BA/BS in Accounting, Math or Finance preferred, or Master's degree a plus

  • Professional certifications in finance, accounting, and/or actuarial preferred

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience, including a minimum of 3 years supervisory experience leading individuals to meet their deliverables

  • Experience working in accounting

  • Financial services industry experience preferred

  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint

  • Experience with GAAP and STAT accounting and reporting

  • Strong communication skills and ability to deliver findings, recommendations, and training topics

  • Excellent decision making and problem-solving skills

  • Innovative and creative in resolving issues and improving processes

  • Ability to effectively collaborate cross-functionally and build relationships with others

  • Ability to prioritize, organize and plan

  • A history of being a successful team member and team leader

  • Goal oriented with a track record of driving through to completion

  • Understand technical knowledge of investment accounting and reporting including GAAP and Statutory accounting frameworks and other financial concepts

  • Foster a positive and proactive work environment

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, as the need arises (month, quarter and year-ends, ad hoc)
