Job summary

University of Tennessee – Knoxville is seeking a Senior Maintenance Specialist for the One Call unit to repair and maintain mechanical and electrical systems within campus buildings and along the perimeter. This on‑site role focuses on rapid response, clear communication with customers, and completing repairs with high satisfaction.

The position requires four years of experience, arc flash safety training, and ability to supervise or mentor new staff while coordinating with other Facilities

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 4 years of related experience or trade school equivalent.
• Trained in electrical arc flash safety and PPE.

Responsibilities

• Answer and diagnose One Call requests; perform or facilitate repairs.
• Communicate repair status to customers and update on resolution time.
• Cross-train with other Facilities Services teams.
• Assist other units to repair or service equipment promptly.
• Support shutting down and restoring utilities (water, power, gas).
• Inspect exterior lighting and repair as needed.

• Collaborate with UTPD and first responders during emergencies.

Job Description

The Senior Maintenance Specialist within the One Call unit repairs and performs maintenance on all mechanical/electrical within the envelope of buildings and perimeter. One Call is responsible for answering and reacting to customers’ needs and concerns 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This specialty group’s primary focus is customer service by answering the One Call phone in a professional manner, interpreting customers’ needs, performing or facilitating necessary repairs with an excellent customer satisfaction outcome. The position requires the ability to follow all repairs through to completion, including those performed by other Facilities Services units while keeping the customer informed of progress.

Responsibilities

• Answer the One Call line, self‑diagnose, assess and repair, or bring the necessary assets.
• Communicate repair status to customers and notify them when the issue will be resolved.
• Cross‑train across other Facilities Services disciplines.
• Assist other Facilities Services units as needed to repair or service equipment promptly.
• Support shutting down utilities (water, power, gas) and restoring them.
• Inspect exterior lighting at night and repair as feasible.
• Inspect campus buildings as time permits; document repair needs and forward to Foreman.
• Perform scheduled maintenance requiring evening or night work to extend usability.
• Mentor and train new maintenance and One Call staff.
• Collaborate with UTPD and first responders during emergencies; safeguard student, staff, and visitor safety.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or GED.
• Experience:
  • Four (4) years of experience or an equivalent combination of trade school and experience.
  • Must be trained in electrical arc flash safety procedures and must be able to wear associated PPE.
• Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to research and identify needed procedures, parts, and equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical control systems.
  • Skill to schedule timely completion of work orders and projects.
  • Ability to climb a ladder and/or work from a lift when the height of a task exceeds 6 feet.
  • Ability to use power tools.
  • Working knowledge of materials, systems, and code requirements related to college facilities maintenance.

Compensation and Benefits

• UT market range: MR06.
• Anticipated salary: $18.00 per hour.
