Job summary

University of Utah Health Hospitals and Clinics in Salt Lake City is seeking a Maintenance Engineer I with a primary focus on fire alarm systems operation, maintenance and management. You will perform carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical tasks as part of a diverse facilities team.

Qualifications

• Three (3) years of hands‑on, building related maintenance and repair experience in: pipefitting, HVACR, steam systems, BAC, plumbing, electrical, or related areas.
• Valid professional trade license or certifications (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, etc.) or other pre-approved licenses.
• State of Utah Driver's License may be required depending on department of hire.

Responsibilities

• Performs all duties of a Maintenance Engineer I.
• Carpentry tasks: lock set repair, patch and paint wall damage, window and door adjustments.
• Mechanical work: equipment readings, pneumatic tube repair, emergency generator testing, emergency lights/batteries.
• Minor electrical repair: outlets, switches, door magnets, lights, ballasts.
• Minor plumbing repair: faucets and shower valves.
• Tests sealing penetrations of fire walls and smoke compartments.
• Tests fire sprinkler/riser system and shutoff procedure.
• Repairs fans, belts, dampers, cooling tower, air handlers, VAV boxes, coils, compressors, vacuum pumps.
• Participates in after-hours on-call rotation.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

• Demonstrated knowledge of hot water systems, boiler theory and function, and chiller system theory.
• Demonstrated knowledge of Fire Barrier theory and NFPA requirements for sealing penetrations, fire alarm systems theory and testing.
• Demonstrated knowledge of medical gasses control and isolation valve theory.
• Demonstrated knowledge of CMS function and theory for life safety.
• Demonstrated proficiency in basic computer functions.
• Ability to read blue prints.
• Ability to participate in after hours on-call rotation.
• Demonstrated, strong interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, or in a group.
• Ability to follow specific directions.
• Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.

Qualifications Required

• Three (3) years of hands‑on, building related maintenance and repair experience in one of the following areas: pipefitting, HVACR, steam‑operated systems used for humidification and sterilization, pneumatic and electronic building control systems (BAC), plumbing systems, commercial or industrial laundry equipment, sterilizing equipment, gas or diesel engines and generators, kitchen and cafeteria equipment, mechanical and electrical systems, carpentry, troubleshooting, or welding and fabrication.
• At least one (1) of the accepted certifications or licensures that fall under any of the following categories: Professional trade license (plumbing, electrical, etc.), Professional trade certifications (HVAC, contractor, MedGas, OSHA, building operator, firestopping, emergency power, ASHE Certified Health Care Physical Environment Worker, etc.), or another potentially applicable certification or license, as pre‑approved by F&E leadership.
• Depending upon department of hire, a valid, State of Utah Driver's License may be required.
