Job summary

DFA is seeking a skilled mechanic to perform maintenance and repairs on trucks and trailers. You will work with others on diagnostic repairs and supervise less experienced staff when needed. Must maintain clear documentation and comply with safety and DOT guidelines.

Starting pay is negotiable based on experience, certifications, and licenses, with opportunities to progress as you demonstrate reliability and skill. Prior CDL or refrigeration credentials are a plus.

Qualifications

• Basic to moderate vehicle maintenance and repairs
• Knowledge of brakes, steering, transmissions, and electrical components
• Ability to read driver inspection reports and follow SOPs

Responsibilities

• Perform basic to moderately difficult maintenance, replacements and repairs
• Maintain brakes, steering, springs, lights, fluids, transmissions and tires
• Diagnose mechanical/electronic problems with- or without diagnostic tools
• Identify root causes and perform repairs
• Interact with drivers to determine nature of complaints
• Complete work orders and paperwork accurately
• Adhere to safety, DOT and company guidelines
• Mentor less experienced mechanics
• Support facility and shop maintenance as needed

GENERAL PURPOSE

Perform the majority of truck and/or trailer maintenance and repairs with minimal support of others, ensuring that equipment is available and in optimal operating condition. Work with the assistance of other mechanics or supervisors when performing highly technical or intricate diagnostic repairs. Work under minimal supervision, exercising some judgment and discretion in resolving issues or making repairs.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform basic to moderately difficult vehicle and preventive maintenance, component replacements, and repairs
• Maintain, repair, inspect, and/or replace brakes, steering mechanisms, springs, air bags, lights, air conditioners, water, fuel, oil, air filters, coolant and chemicals, transmissions, tire air pressure, tire tread, tires, chassis, drive lines, u-joints, air tanks, batteries, air lines, power cords, wipers, mirrors, drive train components, or other equipment as necessary
• Perform facility maintenance duties
• Use shop management system and other electronic systems available
• Diagnose mechanical and electronic problems, using diagnostic computer when applicable
• Identify root cause of failures/conditions and perform repairs as required
• Interact with drivers to properly determine nature of complaint once assigned a task
• Work in accordance with all federal, state, and corporate compliance guidelines (e.g., safety, DOT)
• Complete work orders and paperwork in a timely and accurate manner, maintaining high quality standards in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP’s)
• Respond to accidents or inoperable vehicles to transport equipment back to shop for repair, if appropriate
• Keep management informed of safety, operator, and equipment observations and concerns
• Assist in identifying opportunities to improve processes, utilizing continuous improvement mindset
• Maintain a clean, sanitary and safe work area which may include wearing of all required personal protective equipment in designated areas, confined space safety, safe chemical handling, fall restraints, etc.
• Assist and mentor less experienced mechanics

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• High school diploma or equivalent
• 2 to 4 years of mechanic, maintenance, or related experience
• Certification and/or License – Mechanic certification, CDL license, refrigeration license, or other relevant certifications or licenses may be required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Skill with engines, anti-lock braking system, transmission, diagnostic equipment, and software
• Basic computer skills
• Knowledge and understanding of DOT regulations
• Able to read and understand driver inspection reports
• Able to assist other mechanics on complex repairs in a safe and useful manner
• Able to operate tools, equipment, and peripheral accessories
• Able to independently access and use internal and external maintenance documents
• Able to work in a team environment
