Job summary

Dead River Company in Biddeford, ME is seeking a skilled Maintenance Mechanic to keep our fleet and equipment in top operating condition. You will conduct preventive maintenance, perform repairs, and ensure safety compliance across all company vehicles.

The role requires diesel and gasoline engine knowledge, DOT and inspection expertise, and the ability to work with vendors and a busy shop. We offer competitive hourly pay and a strong benefits package with growth opportunities.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Several years of diesel and gasoline engine experience required.
  • Knowledge of air and hydraulic brake systems.
  • Familiarity with fuel systems, electrical wiring and suspensions.
  • Ability to pass a D.O.T. physical and safety certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Review daily truck reports and repair safety issues.
  • Perform lubrication, fluid checks, and oil changes per PM schedules.
  • Repair vehicle systems including brakes, tires, suspension and wiring.
  • Conduct state and federal D.O.T inspections.
  • Maintain and repair fueling equipment and emergency shut-off systems.
  • Keep maintenance records and report inventory needs to supervisor.
  • Schedule outside repairs with vendors.
  • Maintain a clean, organized garage and work area.

Position Summary:

Maintain company vehicles and other equipment in safe mechanical condition. Conduct preventative maintenance to prevent untimely wear, damage or breakdown. Keep fleet in a high state of operational readiness.

Essential Functions:
  1. Review daily truck reports and immediately repair any safety issues
  2. Perform lubrication, fluid check, and oil changes in accordance with company preventive maintenance schedules and vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.
  3. Conduct routine repairs on all vehicle systems and components including changing and rotating tires, brake repair, spring replacement, and troubleshooting and repair of a variety of truck systems maintenance issues.
  4. Perform all necessary vehicle inspections including state and federal D.O.T.
  5. Maintain and repair fuel pumping equipment, piping, ticket registers, and emergency shut-off systems.
  6. Maintain maintenance records on all vehicles and equipment
  7. Track all parts used and report inventory needs to supervisor.
  8. Schedule outside repairs with appropriate vendors.
  9. Keep garage and maintenance areas neat and organized

Contacts:

The Mechanic has frequent contact with the Operations Manager or location manager drivers, vendors, and office staff.

Education:

High school diploma or GED is preferred. Some vocational or technical training relating to automotive mechanics is desirable.

Experience:

This position requires several years experience or a combination of experience and training to include a thorough knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, air and hydraulic brake systems, vehicle wiring, suspension and other items and systems related to vehicles.

Certification and Testing:
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License with hazardous materials, air brake, and tank endorsements
  • CETP training and certification
  • Brake adjusting license
  • Mechanics must be able to pass a D.O.T physical
  • VK Inspections Certificate
  • State vehicle inspection license
  • Certification to reseal meters and register
Equipment Used:

Hand tools, air tools, drills, presses and grinders, lifts, jacks, jack stands, tire changing and balancing equipment, various testing equipment, welding equipment and cutting torches

Decisions Made:

The Mechanic makes decisions regarding routine maintenance and parts replacement. Major repairs and associated parts expenditures require the approval of the Operations Manager.

Safety Considerations:

The Mechanic must make vehicle safety a top priority. The Mechanic must have an awareness of the hazards and potential injuries from the various tools used to perform job functions. A knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets relating to all chemicals and petroleum products is required as well as hazardous materials training.

Other Attributes Required:

Must be able to prioritize workloads and distinguish between minor, major and safety-related repairs. The Mechanic must be a team player and work well with others.

Work Environment:

Most of the day is spent inside a repair garage. It is periodically necessary to respond to road service calls in all types of weather. There is frequent contact with petroleum products, fumes, and cleaning solvents. Noise levels are generally moderate but may occasionally reach a very loud level. Work may be under, inside, or on top of vehicles. There is occasionally vibration, a risk of electrical shock, and work near moving mechanical parts.

Physical Requirements Analysis:
  • The position requires frequent standing. The position also requires some walking and occasional sitting.
  • There is occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and climbing. The mechanic will need to climb up onto the truck/tank, crawl under the truck and /or trailer, and be in awkward positions while making repairs.
  • There is frequent use of the hands/arms to reach, feel, handle, push, or pull.
  • There is frequent communication involving both speaking and listening.
Weight or Force Moved:

Frequently the mechanic is lifting from 0 to 25 pounds. Occasionally the mechanic must lift weights from 25 pounds to 100 pounds or more.
