A Day in the Life

The Acute Care & Monitoring (ACM) business develops technologies that support clinicians in critical care environments, including the operating room, intensive care unit, and emergency department. This role supports the airway management portfolio and is part of a product development team focused on creating next-generation medical devices that improve visualization, access, and patient care during airway procedures. The team combines the agility of a focused R&D organization with the resources and scale of a global medical technology company.

This position is located onsite at Medtronic's Lafayette, Colorado campus and requires close collaboration with software, hardware, systems, and mechanical engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle.

As a Senior Firmware Engineer, you will contribute to the development of embedded software for medical devices used in acute care settings. The role focuses on Embedded Linux development, hardware-software integration, system architecture, and software quality within a regulated product development environment. You will work across multiple stages of development, from requirements through verification and sustainment, while helping deliver reliable, secure, and maintainable medical device software.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, debug, and maintain embedded software applications using C and C++ within Linux-based environments.
  • Contribute to software requirements, architecture, implementation, integration, verification, and maintenance activities throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Develop and support embedded Linux platform services, device interfaces, and application-level functionality.
  • Integrate software with hardware components including cameras, displays, sensors, and communication interfaces.
  • Implement and maintain system features such as secure boot, over-the-air updates, diagnostics, and system monitoring capabilities.
  • Collaborate with software, hardware, systems, and mechanical engineering teams to define technical solutions and resolve complex integration challenges.
  • Generate and maintain technical documentation supporting design controls, verification activities, and regulated product development requirements.
  • Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, technical guidance, and engineering best practices.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree with 5+ years of embedded software development experience OR Master's degree with 3+ years of embedded software development experience.
  • Proficiency in C and C++ software development.
  • Experience developing software for embedded systems in Linux-based environments.
  • Experience with hardware communication interfaces including USB, UART, I2C, and SPI.
  • Experience with hardware-software debugging, integration activities, and version control systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing real-time software for microprocessor-based systems.
  • Experience with graphical user interface frameworks such as Qt or LVGL.
  • Experience with embedded driver development or maintenance.
  • Experience within regulated industries such as medical devices, aerospace, or defense.
  • Knowledge of IEC 62304, ISO 14971, and ISO 13485.
  • Experience with Python or shell scripting.

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$116,800.00 - $175,200.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others
