Sr. Financial Analyst
Reporting to the Sr. Finance Manager, the Sr. Financial Analyst is responsible for overseeing the five-year budget plan, quarterly projection process and year end closing process for a set of assigned University Student Services (USS) departments, maintaining financial and personnel tracking databases, creating and distributing management reports, and completing analysis projects.
University Student Services encompasses a breadth of student services including admissions, financial aid, student affairs, integrative learning and life design, student health and wellbeing, athletics, and administrative student services. Some services span the entire university, and some services are specific to the Homewood campus. As a Financial Data Analyst in USS, you will be assigned to support a subset of departments that carry out these services.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Partner with a Financial Business Analyst to create a Finance Relationship Team responsible for managing an assigned financial portfolio.
- Lead the development of the five-year financial plan for the assigned grouping of USS Departments.
- Utilize prior year data, historic trends and University 5-year financial assumptions, to assist departments in the development of a five-year budget plan.
- Identify available sources of funding for new initiatives.
- Ensure the accurate and efficient upload of projection and budget information into the Oracle EPM system using the SmartView interface or the web application.
- Communicate final approved budgets to department leaders and Vice Provosts.
Lead quarterly projection development.
- Oversee the Quarterly Projection process for assigned departments.
- Generate projections using trend analysis and other analytical tools.
- Document projections in existing financial tools and create supplemental worksheets as needed.
- Export projections to department schedules for their review.
- Communicate with departments on projections, making changes as needed and gaining consensus on final numbers.
- Generate summary narratives explaining all material variances.
Conduct analysis.
- Conduct financial analysis for USS leadership and departments as required.
Maintain Budget and Projection Tools.
- Ensure that the financial tools that support the underlying data are maintained to ensure accurate budgeting and projections.
Reporting/Projecting Liaison with departments.
- Coordinate with department on all projection and management reporting issues.
Maintain Personnel database.
- In coordination with the Sr Finance Manager, ensure the Personnel database BOT is maintained, tracking filled, vacant and inactive positions and reconcile compensation budgets and projections to the supporting database.
Lead monthly VP reporting process.
- Create and distribute monthly management level reports for Departments and VPs.
- Create quarterly Vice Provost level reporting and participate in Vice Provost quarterly review meetings.
- Enter budget/projection information into Oracle.
Closing
- In coordination with Sr Finance Manager, analyze year-end activity and results to understand variances from budget and projections.
- Make closing journal entries, where necessary, to accurately reflect annual results.
- Create year end reporting for assigned USS departments and related Vice Provosts that clearly tell their fiscal year financial story.
Other duties as assigned.
- Perform other duties as required that are assigned by Sr Finance Manager or USS Leadership.
Special Knowledge, Skills, And/or Abilities
- Advanced analytical skills.
- Experience with detailed financial planning, projections, and forecasting.
- Experience with financial modeling.
- Proficiency with business software packages; advanced Excel skills and familiarity with SAP, Oracle and SmartView preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work with flexibility on several tasks simultaneously and to meet various concurrent deadlines is required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or other related field.
- Five years of progressively responsible related financial/accounting experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
