The Senior Electrical Designer produces and checks electrical design deliverables in support of the project's electrical engineering scope, working under the direction of the Lead Electrical Engineer and in coordination with other disciplines, from design development through construction support. Typical deliverables include one-line and three-line diagrams, panel and equipment schedules, cable/conduit routing, grounding and lightning protection layouts, and lighting layouts, all conforming to project specifications, applicable codes, and company quality standards. This is a senior technical/design position; it may include mentoring of junior designers but does not carry supervisory or engineer-of-record authority.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Prepare and check electrical design deliverables, including one-line and three-line diagrams, panel schedules, cable and conduit schedules, grounding and lightning protection layouts, lighting layouts, and equipment arrangement drawings, using AutoCAD, Revit, and/or other CAD/BIM platforms in accordance with project design standards.
- Coordinate electrical design activities with other disciplines (civil, structural, mechanical, instrumentation) to resolve layout conflicts and maintain interdisciplinary consistency across the model and drawing set.
- Perform electrical load calculations, voltage drop calculations, cable sizing, and short‑circuit/coordination study inputs under the direction of the Lead Electrical Engineer.
- Review vendor and subcontractor drawings and submittals for conformance to the project's electrical design and specifications, and prepare markups and technical comments for engineering review.
- Support development of material take‑offs (MTOs), bills of material, and requisitions for electrical equipment and bulk materials.
- Maintain design deliverables within the project document control and CAD/BIM management system, ensuring correct revision control, issue status, and drawing register accuracy.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior designers and CAD/drafting staff assigned to the discipline; check their work for accuracy and standards compliance.
- Support field engineering and construction by responding to RFIs, reviewing field change requests, and preparing as-built/redline markups related to electrical design.
- Apply and enforce applicable codes and standards (NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, and local jurisdictional requirements) in all design work, escalating conflicts or ambiguities to the Lead Electrical Engineer.
- Participate in interdisciplinary design reviews, 3D model reviews, and safety‑in‑design/HAZOP reviews as required, representing the electrical discipline's design intent.
- Comply with all Company and HSE procedures and policies.
- Follow Corporate Principles:
- Professionalism - Professional in everything we do
- Integrity - Integrity above all
- Teamwork - One Team. One Spirit. One Goal.
Required Skills:
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit and other electrical design software; familiarity with 3D modeling/BIM coordination platforms preferred.
- Working knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, IEEE, and other applicable electrical design codes and standards.
- Strong technical aptitude in electrical power distribution, grounding, lighting, and instrumentation interface design.
- Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, P&IDs, specifications, and vendor data for electrical design coordination.
- Strong attention to detail and disciplined quality‑checking of own and others' work.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for interdisciplinary coordination and technical reporting.
- Ability to mentor junior staff and to work with minimal supervision on complex design tasks.
Education and Experience:
- Associate's degree or technical certificate in drafting/design, or equivalent CAD/design training; B.S. in Engineering Technology or related field preferred.
- Minimum 8‑10 years of electrical design experience in an industrial, EPC, or data center environment.
- Proven experience producing lead electrical design deliverables (one-lines, panel schedules, cable/conduit routing) with minimal supervision.
Physical Requirements:
- The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access files, office machinery, etc., and periodically visit the construction jobsite for design verification and field walks.
- Ability to wear and use required personal protective equipment (PPE) when visiting the construction site.
- Ability to operate a computer and CAD/BIM workstation for extended periods.
Safety:
- Follow all company and client operating procedures, standards, policies, and training to ensure safe and efficient conduct on site and in the office.
- Actively participate in the company safety program by correcting or reporting unsafe acts and/or conditions.
- Take part in and support HSE initiatives, including safety‑in‑design reviews.
