Job summary

The Hanover Insurance Group is seeking a Senior Coverage Counsel to join our National Claims Counsel team. This role can be remote or based in our Worcester, MA office and focuses on providing expert coverage opinions and guidance across a broad suite of policies.

You will work with claims handlers to strategically resolve disputes and may oversee select coverage litigation. Ideal candidates bring 10+ years in property and casualty law, a J.D.

Qualifications

• J.D. degree required and admitted to practice in at least one US jurisdiction.
• 10+ years of practicing law with substantial property & casualty insurance coverage experience.
• Ability to research, analyze and provide actionable coverage opinions.

Responsibilities

• Research and provide legal opinions on coverage issues arising from insurance contracts (auto, general liability, specialty, and property/marine).
• Prepare timely, actionable coverage opinions on high-exposure claims.
• Collaborate with claims handlers to develop strategies to resolve coverage disputes.
• May manage selective coverage litigation (declaratory judgments, bad-faith, related disputes).
• Review and approve proposed coverage actions on behalf of the company.
• Collaborate with underwriting and product teams to improve insurance offerings.

Job description

Position Overview:

Our National Claims Counsel team is seeking an experienced Senior Coverage Counsel to join our expanding organization. This role offers flexibility to work remotely or from our Worcester MA office. Reporting to the Managing Claims Counsel Claims Legal, Sr. Coverage Counsel serves as legal counsel to Hanover’s claim organization, focused primarily on providing legal opinions, advice, and resolution strategies on coverage and extra-contractual issues arising from the company’s insurance policies and coverage positions. This is a full-time, exempt role.

In this role you will:

• Primary responsibility is to research and provide legal advice and opinions to claims handlers on coverage issues arising from the company’s insurance contracts, including auto and general liability; specialty (e.g., management liability & professional liability); and first party property and marine coverages.
• Prepare timely, appropriate and actionable coverage opinions/advice on selected high complexity/exposure claims.
• Partner with claim handlers to develop strategies that optimally resolve coverage disputes.
• May manage selective coverage litigation brought by or against the Company (including declaratory judgment actions, extra-contractual bad-faith, and other claims related disputes).
• Review and approve proposed coverage actions brought on behalf of the company.
• Collaborate with underwriting and product areas to improve the Company’s insurance products.

What you need to apply:

• Significant experience preparing coverage opinions on property casualty insurance policies either in a law firm or in-house for a property and casualty insurer required.
• Experience litigating insurance coverage and related bad faith disputes either in private practice or in-house for a property and casualty insurer a plus.
• 10 or more years of experience in practicing law in a law firm or in-house, a substantial portion of which involved property & casualty insurance coverage matters.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a team framework.
• Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and clients.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to clearly articulate actionable legal advice.
• Computer literacy, including proficiency in Word, Excel and Outlook and keyboarding skills.
• Familiarity with legal principles and issues concerning E-Discovery.
• JD degree or equivalent.
• Admitted to practice in at least one US jurisdiction.
• Skilled at time management and organizing work.
