Job description

Position Summary
The Senior Broadcast Operations Engineer is a key member of the technical team, responsible for ensuring the seamless operation of Wyoming PBS’s broadcast and production systems across studio, master control, and field environments. This role plays an essential part in the setup, operation, and maintenance of video and audio systems used in both live and recorded productions, including support for the station’s mobile production truck. In addition to managing day-to-day technical operations, the Senior Broadcast Operations Engineer works closely with the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to support long-term planning, implement strategic initiatives, optimize workflows, and maintain the reliability of statewide broadcast infrastructure and digital platforms.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Assist the CTO in evaluating and implementing new technologies, infrastructure upgrades, and system integrations.
  2. Provide input on capital planning, equipment procurement, and long-term engineering strategy.
  3. Lead setup, operation, and breakdown of Wyoming PBS’s mobile production truck for live remote broadcasts.
  4. Assist with studio equipment calibration, maintenance, and upgrades.
  5. Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot signal delivery issues at studio.
  6. Respond to emergency technical issues and off-air outages.
  7. Maintain and troubleshoot broadcast automation systems, video routers, and video encoding.
  8. Act as a liaison between engineering and other departments during special projects or live events.
  9. Perform other reasonably related duties as directed or assigned.
Position Specifications and Minimum Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Electronic Technology or related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the US Department of Education.
Experience
  • 5 years of experience in the broadcast industry or a related field.
Licenses/Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license.
Equivalency Statement
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience using FCC online database and application procedures.
  • Society of Broadcast Engineers certification.
  • Valid CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) or be willing acquire it.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  1. Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations for television broadcasting.
  2. Extensive knowledge of computer networking including LAN, WAN, SAN, NAS, NMS and Security systems as it relates to a statewide network.
  3. Knowledge and abilities in application of DTV fundamentals including ATSC, ATSC 3.0, 8VSB, MPEG standards.
  4. Knowledge of broadcast transmitters and/or TV translators.
  5. Knowledge and understanding of video, audio, RF and control system flow for a television broadcast and production facility.
  6. Knowledge of and skill in use of computers and software applications, specifically MS DOS, Microsoft Windows and Office, Linux/OSX/UNIX.
  7. Ability to effectively identify and resolve problems.
  8. Effective interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
  9. Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion.
  10. Ability to work independently while supporting a team effort.
Level of Supervision
  • Position operates under the general supervision of the Chief Technology Officer.

Equipment Used
  • Standard office equipment including personal computer, calculator, fax machine, phone, scanners, copy machine, and telephone. Broadcast engineering equipment, including transmitters, microwave system and translators, computer servers, and all related or supporting equipment and hand/power tools.
Physical Requirements
  • Tasks require variety of physical activities, which do not generally involve muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching and light lifting. Regular talking, hearing and seeing required in the normal course of performing the job. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required to perform some essential functions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Environmental Conditions
  • Work is performed in an office, studio and field environment. Work requires working in extreme conditions. Work requires an ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Some evening/weekend work and some travel required, 24/7 on call position. Work is performed under limited supervision.
