PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Senior Automation Engineer is accountable for the creation, development, and deployment support of the next-generation technology strategy for manufacturing process automation. This includes the integration of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and advanced manufacturing digital technologies to enhance material handling, operational efficiency, and data-driven decision-making. This position is accountable for driving affordable and sustainable solutions to enable the transformation of Owens Corning manufacturing.

This individual will be expected to apply their technical expertise to create enterprise standards and collaborate closely with IT departments to develop reliable and scalable manufacturing IT/OT system architecture.

The role involves utilizing product, process, application, and technical expertise to represent Owens Corning (OC) externally at trade and industry associations and regulatory forums to influence the progress of industry codes and standards, customer excitement and interest, and market trends that will affect the business segments' future.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Knowing Our Products and Processes (20%)

• Understands the positioning of our products in the marketplace.


• Understands industry automation trends and how process changes influence new technology demands.


• Collaborates with customers and stakeholders to scope new solutions and to translate needs into innovation opportunities.


• Seeks solutions that can be deployed horizontally through the various Owens Corning business portfolios.

Developing and Executing the Technology Strategy (40%)

• Engages in project planning teams to identify automation opportunities, including AGV deployment and digital manufacturing enhancements.


• Establishes factory and laboratory examples of robotics, AGVs, and automation solutions that can be scaled and deployed to Owens Corning operations.


• Introduces new, or improves existing, automation solutions in factory production lines to advance existing processes via mechanical/electronic/computer technology, including AGV-based material transport systems.


• Participates in addressing enterprise-wide platform and technology requirements for applications, including digital twin modeling, predictive maintenance, and real-time data analytics.


• Builds connections across the enterprise to collaborate on the creation of automation, controls, and IT/OT standards, with a focus on AGV integration and smart factory initiatives.


• Participating in addressing enterprise-wide platform and technology requirements for applications.


• Provides technology support for the direction of the automation portfolio and leverage assets to support growth in established industries / markets.


• Establishes rapport and develops partnerships to work effectively with all levels across the organization including Science& Technology, IT, and Operations.


• Applies mechatronic solutions to the transfer of material, components or finished goods.


• Applies project management skills and leadership to deliver successful project outcomes.

Process Innovation & New Product Industrialization (20%)

• Utilizes Open Innovation and Agile methodologies as strategic advantages, positioning OC in the market as a preferred partner for technology commercialization.

• Develops processes for new products with a focus on robotics, automation, and mechatronics to advance our capabilities at a rapid pace with a digital first approach leveraging modeling and simulation.

Growing Our People (10%)

• Collaborates on Agile and TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) methodologies as our culture for doing rapid innovation and early management as a core competency of the organization.


• Participates in growth and development (i.e. seminars, further education, etc) for their area of expertise.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in science or engineering.


• 5-10 years of experience in the development and deployment of automation technology.


• Deep understanding of sensors, robotics, IT/OT systems and various controls for automated systems.


• Proficiency with process integration and mechatronic systems.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

• Advanced degree in science or engineering.


• A strong background in process development and/or product innovation.


• Technical experiences in manufacturing or deploying automation with a detailed knowledge of current automation technologies including robotics and advanced manufacturing methods and technologies.


• Experienced in the development of specific automation manufacturing systems incorporating flexible and modular automation.


• Understands industry trends, direction and standards that guide new technology offerings, and uses technology and market intelligence to provide strategic recommendations on initiatives to achieve business objectives.


• Proficiency in Allen Bradley and Siemens PLC programming


• Ability to perform system design, programming, simulation and testing.
