The Senior 3D Technical Drafter develops accurate, fabrication-ready shop drawings and technical documentation that translate conceptual designs, architectural information, and project requirements into manufacturable solutions.
This role requires strong hands-on Microvellum experience, along with advanced knowledge of commercial millwork, cabinetry, custom fabrication, materials, hardware, architectural detailing, and manufacturing methods. The position works closely with Project Management, Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure drawings clearly communicate design intent and support efficient fabrication, assembly, and installation.
The ideal candidate combines advanced drafting and detailing skills with practical fabrication knowledge, strong problem-solving abilities, and the ability to independently manage multiple projects in a fast-paced custom manufacturing environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop detailed, fabrication-ready shop drawing packages, including plans, elevations, sections, details, assemblies, materials, hardware, and installation information.
- Use Microvellum to develop, modify, engineer, and prepare cabinetry and millwork products for manufacturing.
- Maintain accurate Microvellum project data, materials, hardware, machining requirements, and manufacturing information.
- Translate architectural drawings, conceptual designs, client requirements, field information, and specifications into coordinated technical drawings.
- Develop detailed 3D models and technical documentation identifying dimensions, construction methods, materials, finishes, hardware, assembly, and installation requirements.
- Prepare drawings and manufacturing information for cabinetry, architectural millwork, fixtures, retail environments, branded environments, and other custom-fabricated products.
- Review designs for manufacturability and constructability and identify conflicts, missing information, dimensional issues, material concerns, or fabrication challenges before release.
- Develop practical technical solutions in coordination with Engineering, Project Management, Manufacturing, and other stakeholders.
- Coordinate with Manufacturing to ensure drawing packages and production information are complete, accurate, and appropriate for fabrication.
- Support CNC-driven manufacturing processes by preparing accurate machining information and production-ready data where applicable.
- Verify materials, finish codes, hardware, edge treatments, construction methods, tolerances, and assembly details before release.
- Interpret architectural plans, specifications, finish schedules, and approved design documents.
- Coordinate with Project Managers regarding project scope, priorities, design intent, approvals, and schedules.
- Participate in drawing reviews and resolve redlines, revisions, technical questions, and production-related issues.
- Conduct quality reviews of drawings and technical documentation to reduce errors, rework, production disruption, and installation issues.
- Ensure drawings comply with company standards, client requirements, project specifications, accessibility requirements, and applicable building standards.
- Prepare facility impact and installation documentation identifying utilities, structural support, blocking, electrical requirements, clearances, and other site conditions when required.
- Coordinate technical requirements with vendors and suppliers for specialty materials, hardware, components, or fabrication processes.
- Support Manufacturing and Project Management with technical questions during fabrication, assembly, quality review, shipment, and installation.
- Maintain accurate project files, drawing revisions, approvals, and related technical documentation.
- Manage multiple projects, drawing packages, revisions, and deadlines simultaneously.
- Identify opportunities to improve drafting, Microvellum, engineering, and manufacturing workflows.
- Support development and maintenance of Microvellum libraries, templates, drafting standards, construction standards, and detailing practices.
- Provide technical guidance and knowledge sharing to other designers and drafters as appropriate.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Drafting, Construction Technology, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of five years of professional drafting, detailing, engineering, or technical design experience, preferably in commercial millwork, cabinetry, custom fabrication, retail, hospitality, commercial interiors, architectural fabrication, exhibits, or similar industries.
- Professional Microvellum experience is required.
- Demonstrated ability to use Microvellum to develop cabinetry, millwork, or custom-fabrication projects through manufacturing documentation.
- Strong knowledge of Microvellum workflows, including products, materials, hardware, construction methods, machining information, and manufacturing outputs.
- Experience developing or modifying Microvellum products, libraries, standards, or engineering data preferred.
- Strong knowledge of commercial cabinetry, architectural millwork, fixtures, hardware, joinery, materials, finishes, and fabrication methods.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural plans, elevations, sections, specifications, and finish schedules.
- Practical understanding of manufacturing processes, assembly methods, tolerances, installation requirements, and CNC production.
- Experience designing, detailing, or programming for CNC routers, laser cutting machines, or similar equipment preferred.
- Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD or another professional computer-aided design platform.
- Proficiency in Rhino preferred, or ability to become proficient within a reasonable period after hire.
- Experience with Rhino, AutoCAD, Fusion, Inventor, SolidWorks, SketchUp, Vectorworks, ArchiCAD, or Revit preferred.
- Ability to develop detailed 3D models, shop drawings, fabrication drawings, assembly documentation, and production information.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to independently manage multiple projects and deadlines with strong attention to detail.
- General knowledge of building design, architectural documentation, accessibility requirements, and applicable building standards.
- Direct fabrication, manufacturing, installation, or shop-floor experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, PDF editing software, and related business software.
- Bilingual English and Spanish skills preferred.
