Job Summary:
Supports all aspects of database administration including installation, configuration, upgrades, performance tuning, backup and recovery, problem solving, adherence to security policies and all other aspects of managing the databases. In addition, they would plan, develop and optimize database systems, troubleshoot issues submitted via Incident tickets, and provide both end user and developer support. The ideal candidate should have strong technical skills, excellent problem-solving abilities and experience with high-availability solutions.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Production Implementation and Configuration/On going Support (15%)
• Installation and configuration of Microsoft SQL Server Database, Oracle Databases and other databases as needed (PostGres, Mongo, MySQL are nice to have).
• Support Hypercare for Production implementations in addition to additional configurations and tuning that may be required as part of initial rollout.
• Responsibilities extend to App Server environments (Oracle Application Server/Weblogic/Tomcat)
• Strategic long and short-term patching and upgrades of databases.
• Refine and automate processes for day to day activities.
• Identify and troubleshoot software problems at the database and Application Server Level.

Strategic Business Interaction (15%):
• Interact with Business colleagues, vendors, and IT colleagues to support IT Projects and KTLO (Keep the Lights On) initiatives.
• Educate other IT and Business personnel regarding IT standards, policies and procedures.
• Assist developers/contractors with complex SQL tuning and make recommendations for schema refinement.
Work closely with Business Units and other technical resources to understand new systems, 3rd Party products, and business requirements.

Keep the Lights On (50%)
• Maintain and Configure databases and their processes.
• Monitoring of System Health and Performance
• Ensure a high level of security, performance and availability for the databases supported.
• Document database configuration processes and standards associated with setup.
• Assure Backup and Recovery capabilities for all database systems supported.
Perform scheduled maintenance and support release deployment after hours, if required.
Support New Projects (20%):
• Participate in the organizational change management activities for UGI technology projects as a team member.
• Contribute to various infrastructure activities related to the project including Technical Team meetings and planning sessions.
• Support project cutover planning activities as it related to the database environment. This should include backout and recovery procedures.
• Keep actively involved in Hypercare activities after project implementation.
• Advise Team leads on issues related to the database and frontend application servers that are related.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of business software applications and hardware technologies as they apply to the databases supported. Stays current with all IT industry trends, emerging technologies, and database security.
  • Working knowledge of COBIT5 based IT Governance and Management framework or other structured industry standard methodologies.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, and interpersonal skills. Frequently presents information to their team, department, and business areas.
  • Understands project plans and can clearly articulate their role, project goals, and timelines. Develops project plans for small projects; partners with Project Managers to develop project plans for large projects and assists Manager with resource management.
  • Authors technical design specifications for smaller projects. Mentor other team members regarding technical information. Must continuously develop and maintain necessary technical skillsets to enhance business solutions within the UGI architecture.
  • Continuous improvement of Monitoring performance, enhanced procedures, and tuning of the database.
  • Experience with Cloud Based Database Platforms (Azure, AWS, etc.)
  • Knowledge of replication methods, clustering, failover strategies.

Education and Experience:

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Information/Computer Science, Business Administration, Engineering, Mathematics, Information Systems or equivalent discipline.
  • Three to Four years of MS SQL Server Experience performing the duties of Data Base Administrator. Strong knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server (2016/2019/2022). Experience with High Availability Solutions (AlwaysOn Groups, Failover Cluster Instances). Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Solar Winds DPA. Working knowledge of SQL Server security best practices and procedures. Ability to automate database tasks using Power Shell scripts. Additional experience with Oracle, DB2, PostGres, Mongo DB is a plus.
  • ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) Foundation certification (at hire or within 12 months in position).
  • Proficiency in MS-Office products
