Job summary

The Whitney Museum of American Art offers a semester-long, paid internship in the Curatorial - Prewar Art department. This onsite internship runs spring 2027 with 16–21 hours per week over 10–12 weeks, from January 18 to April 26, 2027, and interns are assigned to a department for the duration.

Interns conduct research and provide administrative support for exhibitions and the permanent collection, assist with archival and provenance work, and help prepare materials for archives and proposals

Qualifications

• Interest in art history, especially American art from 1900–1960.
• Previous research experience required; archival research experience is highly preferred.
• Intern must be highly organized, proactive, and able to multitask.
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Students currently enrolled in accredited academic year programs are eligible.
• While a demonstrated interest in art and art history is preferred, students of all disciplines are encouraged to apply.
• Previous museum experience is not required.

Program Overview

The Whitney’s Academic Year Internship program offers a semester-long paid internship for rising Juniors and above (to include Graduate students) enrolled in an accredited academic program. The internship is in person and onsite. For spring 2027, interns commit between 16–21 hours per week over 10–12 weeks for a total of 176 hours. The official program dates will span from January 18-April 26, 2027. Interns are assigned to a specific department at the Museum for the duration of the internship.

Expected Projects & Assignments

• Conducting research and providing administrative support for forthcoming exhibitions related to American art from 1900–1960
• Providing research and administrative support for permanent collection stewardship, gifts and acquisitions
• Assisting with conducting archival and provenance research
• Assisting in preparing materials for the archives
• Assisting with regular exhibition proposals, preparing presentations, and other administrative tasks that relate more broadly to the prewar department

Skills & Qualifications

Compensation

Interns will be paid a stipend of $3000.
