Job summary

Summit Area YMCA is seeking a Sports & Enrichment Director to lead engaging sports and enrichment programs for children, teens, and adults in Summit, NJ and at related branches.

You will recruit and coach staff, oversee Summer Sports Camp, and coordinate clinics, leagues, and classes while ensuring safety and high-quality experiences for participants.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of two years of experience leading sports, recreation, or youth programming.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification required or able to obtain within 60 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, supervise, and evaluate youth and adult sports programs.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and support program staff with coaching and feedback.
  • Oversee the Sports Camp program during the summer and participate on the camp leadership team.

Job Description

Do you love sports, youth development, and creating programs that bring people together? The Summit Area YMCA is looking for a Sports & Enrichment Director to lead engaging sports and enrichment experiences for children, teens, and adults. This role supports programming at both our Summit YMCA and Berkeley Heights YMCA branches, as well as at camp and other program sites.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can build great programs, develop and support staff, and connect with participants and families. From youth sports leagues and enrichment classes to clinics and summer Sports Camp, you'll have the opportunity to shape programs that help participants learn new skills, build confidence, and have fun.

What You'll Do
  • Lead the planning, implementation, and evaluation of youth and adult sports and youth enrichment programs.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and support program staff, providing ongoing coaching and feedback.
  • Oversee the YMCA's Sports Camp program during the summer and serve as a member of the summer camp leadership team.
  • Organize and lead sports clinics, leagues, classes, enrichment activities, and other seasonal programming.
  • Step in to instruct sports classes and activities as needed.
  • Coordinate schedules, teams, facilities, equipment, officials, coaches, and other program logistics.
  • Develop new programs and identify opportunities to strengthen participation and the overall participant experience.
  • Manage program budgets, expenses, registrations, and other administrative responsibilities.
  • Build positive relationships with participants, families, community organizations, and partners.
  • Ensure programs meet YMCA expectations for safety, quality, service, and operational excellence.
Salary & Schedule

This is a full-time, exempt position with an annual salary range of $55,000-$62,000, based on experience and qualifications. The schedule is generally Monday through Friday; however, flexibility is required based on program needs. YMCA programming operates seven days a week, and evening or weekend hours may be required for classes, leagues, events, and seasonal programming. The schedule may vary throughout the year to support program operations.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Essential Functions
  • Plans, implements, supervises, and evaluates youth and adult sports programs.
  • Plans, implements, supervises, and evaluates youth enrichment programs.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, supervises, and supports program staff; provides ongoing coaching, feedback, and performance management to ensure effective program delivery and adherence to YMCA standards.
  • Directs and supervises program activities to meet YMCA objectives, ensuring programs are safe, well-organized, and high quality.
  • Plans, leads, and oversees the Sports Camp program during the summer season, including program operations, staffing, scheduling, activities, and overall program quality; serves as a member of the summer camp leadership team and collaborates with other camp leaders to support safe, high-quality camp operations.
  • Organizes and conducts sports clinics and other sports and enrichment programming.
  • Secures and schedules athletic fields and facilities. Transports and sets up equipment for games and practices; monitors and purchases necessary sporting equipment within budget.
  • Creates teams from paid and financially assisted registrations. Organizes and conducts parent orientation meetings and training and meetings for coaches.
  • Develops and distributes team practice and game schedules; trains and schedules sports officials; develops and distributes sports rules, guidelines, and handbooks.
  • Purchases and distributes team uniforms and awards; coordinates and distributes team photographs. Organizes and hosts season parties and events.
  • Manages the financial aspects of programs, including budget planning and monitoring, and manages administrative functions and daily operations to ensure programs comply with local, state, and YMCA policies.
  • Compiles program statistics and monitors and evaluates program effectiveness and participation.
  • Assists in the marketing and distribution of youth sports and enrichment program information; may organize and schedule program registrations and review and process program scholarship applications.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations and assists with YMCA fundraising activities and special events.
  • Responds to member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Has an active role and accountability for Association Strategic Plan objectives.
  • Attends all required staff meetings and trainings as necessary and assigned. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor and executive leadership.
