Job summary

Whidbey Telecom in Langley, WA is hiring a Splicing & Repair Technician to oversee installation, maintenance, and repair of fiber optic and copper networks in outside plant areas. The role requires working outdoors in all weather, bending to limited spaces, and handling ladders and heavy equipment.

Responsibilities include splicing, testing, and ensuring service quality for DSL, POTS, and fiber products. Eligible applicants must pass drug screens, have a WA driver’s license, and be able to

• Become familiar with local exchange distribution facilities.
• Locate Whidbey telephone facilities, including privately owned ones.
• Maintain residential and business DSL, POTS, and fiber services in outside plant.
• Splice copper and buried fiber optic cabling in outside plant and customer premises.
• Test and qualify copper and fiber cabling for DSL, POTS, and fiber services.
• Troubleshoot and repair subscriber service issues in the outside plant.
• Provide customer relations support for business and residential clients.

Description

This is a key position for the splicing, maintenance, and repair of Whidbey Telecom's outside plant facilities. This position is based in our Langley, WA office.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE, BUT NOT NECESSARILY BE LIMITED TO:

• The installation of fiber optic and copper twisted pair drop cables, test access points, network interface devices, and initial wiring or rewiring of fiber optic-based and copper twisted pair-based subscriber systems.
• Become familiar with all facilities of the local exchange distribution network.
• Locating Whidbey telephone facilities as well as privately owned.
• Maintenance of residential and business DSL, POTS, and fiber optic internet services in the outside plant.
• Splicing copper twisted pair and buried fiber optic cabling both in the outside plant and on customer premises.
• Testing and prequalifying copper twisted pair and fiber optic cabling for DSL, POTS, and fiber optic internet services both in the outside plant and on customer premises.
• Troubleshoot and repair issues with subscriber services in the outside plant.
• Customer relations for business and residential customers.
• Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Ability to maintain an excellent attendance record.
• Ability to work overtime as required and travel to job and training sites as required.
• Ability to perform assigned work with minimal supervision.
• Possess strong dexterity and hand-eye coordination; ability to distinguish colors.
• Ability to be a Team player.
• Ability to respond and interact in a positive manner to customer issues.
• Ability to communicate (speaking and writing) in English in a clear and easily understood manner.
• Basic computer skills.
• Knowledge of basic networking principles.
• Must be available to work nights, weekends and on-call.
• Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather.
• The physical ability to work in confined spaces such as manholes, crawl spaces, and attics; to climb ladders (including 28-foot ladders for installing aerial drops); and to lift up to 60 pounds is required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

• Valid WA State driver’s license and insurable driving record.
• Possess a Passport or Enhanced Driver’s License or the ability to acquire one for travel across the US/Canada border to work in Pt. Roberts as needed.
• Pre-employment and on-going drug screens required.
• Must be eligible to work in the USA.

Salary range -

Splicing & Repair Technician - $23.53 - $41.00 per hour

Salary ranges are based on available market data for the business sector and geographic location.
