Job description

SPEECH PATHOLOGIST / SLP CLINICAL FELLOW

Provides assessments and treatment within the scope of practice for SLP or SLP-CF in accordance with NYS Practice Act and ASHA Guidelines in a preventative and consultative model. Caseloads include residential group homes and day service locations, with clinicians expected to travel between sites. Most working hours are spent in the field.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
  1. Assess and recommend food size/texture and liquid consistency following OPWDD Choking Prevention Initiative.
  2. Create and revise Speech Protocols to guide staff in safe swallowing practices.
  3. Recommend and attend Modified Barium Swallow Studies (MBSS) as needed.
  4. Screen and refer clients for outpatient speech therapy services.
  5. Create communication tools and assist with device repairs.
  6. Develop and revise Communication Protocols for daily communication support.
  7. Observe and evaluate support personnel implementing speech protocols, providing guidance to ensure high-quality service.
  8. Train staff in the Choking Prevention Curriculum.
  9. Attend clinical meetings as required, such as Clinical Day, Hospitalization, and Pré-move Meetings.
  10. Collaborate with sub-acute rehab, hospital SLPs, and other agencies for seamless care transitions.
  11. Adhere to all documentation standards required by the agency.

  • Maintain professionalism and courtesy in interactions.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to organizational changes.
  • Support departmental initiatives and additional tasks, including special projects and public education.
  • Plan and manage personal time off according to guidelines.
  • Supervising SLPs and Clinical Fellows must meet NYS/ASHA mentorship requirements.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • NYS Licensed SLP: Licensed and registered in NY, with a Certificate of Clinical Competency from ASHA, and meeting continuing education requirements.
  • Clinical Fellow in SLP: Must have completed education requirements for ASHA certification and NYS licensure.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • SLP: Supervise graduate or clinical fellow clinicians as assigned.
  • SLP-CF: No supervisory responsibilities.
