Job summary

Position Summary

The Speech and Language Pathologist's responsibility is to evaluate the various speech, language, or hearing difficulties that may be interfering with a student's ability to make educational progress and to participate in the Planning and Placement Team (PPT) process to determine eligibility and plan an appropriate program. The pathologist works collaboratively with teachers, staff, and families to support student success and help students overcome communication barriers.

Responsibilities Include
  • Provide individual and group therapy to address speech and language disorders
  • Conduct speech and language evaluations to identify students' needs
  • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students requiring speech and language services
  • Collaborate with teachers and school staff to create and implement strategies to support students in the classroom
  • Offer consultation to teachers and staff on language development, speech disorders, and best practices for classroom support
  • Provide progress reports to parents/guardians and participate in PPT meetings
  • Provide support to students in overcoming communication barriers that hinder their academic performance and social interaction
  • Develop and implement interventions and strategies for students with communication challenges
  • Assist in the development of social language programs to promote social skills and peer interaction
  • Maintain accurate records of services provided and student progress
  • Stay current with developments in speech and language pathology and collaborate with community agencies as needed
Job Requirements Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
  • Strong understanding of speech and language disorders, therapy techniques, and assessment tools
  • Ability to work effectively with students, families, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Knowledge of speech therapy and language development strategies
  • Ability to collaborate with teachers, staff, and administrators to support student success
  • Effective communication and advocacy skills
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to speech and language services
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information
Preferred Education And Experience
  • Experience working as a Speech/Language Pathologist in a school setting
  • Bilingual or multilingual preferred
  • Experience with early intervention and working with students with various disabilities
Education/Certification Requirements
  • Master's degree in Speech/Language Pathology from an accredited institution
  • Must hold or be eligible for Connecticut State Department of Education Speech/Language Pathologist certification (061)
Salary

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the current agreement between the Danbury Board of Education and the NEA-Danbury.
