Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited graduate program.
• Successful completion of the National Praxis Examination.
• Successful completion of the Clinical Fellowship Year.
• One year of experience in a clinical setting.

Responsibilities

• Deliver clinical speech-language pathology services to HFHS patients, collaborating with patients, families, and HFHS staff.
• Diagnose speech, language, or swallowing disorders and evaluate patient conditions and prognosis.
• Create customized treatment and therapy programs tailored to each patient’s needs.
• Schedule and conduct meaningful patient follow-up visits to track progress.
• Operate clinical equipment to capture and measure speech production characteristics.
• Perform endoscopic assessments of vocal fold vibratory function and swallowing capabilities.
• Partner with dietary personnel to develop nutritional menus and eating programs for swallowing limitations.
• Recommend and teach patients to use communication technology after cancer or laryngeal surgery.
• Engage in departmental education and research initiatives, including program development and fellow orientation.
• Mentor departmental graduate students and clinical fellows, manage schedules and conduct reviews.
• Represent HFHS at conferences and community events.

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) with certification by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) deliver dynamic clinical services to individuals with adult and pediatric speech, language, cognitive, voice, and swallowing disorders. Services span diagnosis, evaluation, therapy, treatment, and follow-up care. All clinical fellows in Speech-Language Pathology work under the mentorship of ASHA-certified SLPs.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Deliver engaging clinical speech-language pathology services to HFHS patients, including:
  • Collaborating with patients, families, and HFHS staff to explore communication and swallowing challenges;
  • Diagnosing speech, language, or swallowing disorders and evaluating patient conditions and prognosis;
  • Creating customized treatment and therapy programs tailored to each patient's needs;
  • Scheduling and conducting meaningful patient follow-up visits to track progress.
• Operate clinical equipment to capture and measure speech production characteristics during patient evaluations and treatment sessions.
• Perform endoscopic assessments of vocal fold vibratory function and swallowing capabilities.
• Partner with dietary personnel to develop nutritional menus and eating programs that work for patients with swallowing limitations.
• Recommend and teach patients to use appropriate communication technology following cancer or laryngeal surgery, helping them rebuild their communication confidence and skills.
• Jump into departmental education and research initiatives, including program development, clinical fellow orientation, and hands‑on instruction.
• Guide and mentor departmental graduate students and clinical fellows, managing schedules, fostering motivation, conducting performance reviews, and supporting day‑to‑day work responsibilities.
• Represent HFHS at community, regional, and national conferences, sharing knowledge about available programs with local community and social organizations.
• Take on additional related duties as needed to support the team.
