Job summary

The Oregon Department of Education is seeking a Speech Language Pathologist for the Oregon School for the Deaf. The role focuses on supporting language development for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students and integrating ASL/English bilingual approaches within IEPs.

We are seeking a Speech Language Pathologist for the Oregon School for the Deaf!

Position Title & Classification: Speech Language Pathologist

Annual Salary Range: $55,056 - $110,292

About the Oregon School for the Deaf (OSD)

OSD provides direct 24-hr educational and residential services to approximately 130 students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, kindergarten through age 21. The programs and departments at OSD include: Administration, Clerical, Classroom, Residential, Nutrition Services, Athletics, Educational Support Services, Maintenance/Custodial, and Student Health Services. OSD also acts as a resource to the entire state, providing special activities, consultation, and educational services to students, professionals, families, and the public.

All students enrolled at the Oregon School for the Deaf are entitled to the best education that our resources can provide. Each student is valued as a unique individual, to be treated with dignity, in an atmosphere where individual differences are accepted.

Responsibilities

The ideal Speech Language Pathologist candidates provide language-rich environments, prepare themselves as bilingual models, and are committed to our campus-wide initiative that all students are supported as readers and writers. They reflect on their teaching effectiveness on an ongoing basis and work collaboratively with every colleague to promote OSD as a valued and successful school program.

  • Support student communication skills/needs as a related-service per the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Consult with teachers to ensure students receive support they need related to communication.
  • Conduct assessments and observations.
  • Plan and prepare for learning using evidence-based instructional strategies including Reciprocal Teaching.
  • Evaluate students using a variety of assessments.
  • Develop and track IEP’s and align instruction with IEP objectives.
  • Communicate with parents and staff.
  • Give parents feedback on their children’s progress through IEP’s.
  • Participate in ASL/English Bilingual Professional Development.
  • Supervise students during special activities.
  • Work with students who have severe emotional or behavioral problems.
  • Occasionally train teaching assistants, volunteers, college practicum students, and/or student teachers.
Working Conditions
  • Works with active deaf and hard-of-hearing children throughout the day.
  • May be required to supervise students during special activities.
  • May work with students who have severe emotional or behavioral problems with whom physical restraint techniques may need to be used.
  • May work with and train teachers, teaching assistants, volunteers, college practicum students, and/or student teachers.
  • May be exposed to communicable diseases.
  • Walks around and stands a great deal of the time in order to instruct and assess effectively.
  • Duties require possible daily exposure to infectious, communicable, and contagious diseases.
  • Teachers at OSD will utilize ASL for interactions with staff, students, and parents.
  • Sign language communication is essential to communicate at OSD.
  • Required to be a Mandatory Reporter.
  • Some positions may require the ability to obtain certification in basic first aid and pass the agency pupil-transportation vehicle, Class-10 examination.
  • Position will be required to adhere to all of the current COVID restrictions and cleaning requirements set in place by the State of Oregon and mandated Governor’s Executive Orders at all times.
Required Qualifications / Eligibility
  • Licensure through Teachers Standards and Practices Commission: Board of Examiners as a Speech‑Language Pathologist or similar endorsement as a Communication Specialist with teaching English and ASL to Deaf/HH students.
  • ASLPI Level 3 certification within 12 weeks of beginning work.
  • Teachers at OSD must possess an ASLPI Level 3 in order to make OSD a communication-accessible environment.
  • Agency requires all teachers to provide certification that they are ASLPI Level 3 proficient.
  • Certification must be provided to the agency within twelve (12) weeks of beginning work, and you are responsible for paying this initial testing cost.
  • Oregon State University/Bridges Levels: Intermediate or better within 6 months of hire.
  • Background check: fingerprint-based criminal history check including driving record. Adverse background data may be grounds for immediate disqualification.
  • There is a fee (payable by the successful candidate) of $71.50 for the process.
  • May be required to pass Oregon Type 10 driving test to transport students in State vehicles.
  • Basic first aid certification and CPR training.
  • Within three days of hire, all applicants will be required to complete the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Form I-9, confirming authorization to work in the United States.
  • The Oregon Department of Education is an E-Verify employer.

  • Eligible veterans who meet the qualifications will be given veterans' preference.
