Qualifications

  • Each tier requires at least one credential from health-related degrees or wellness certifications or related specialty trainings.
  • Current American Red Cross Certification (adult CPR, AED and first aid) required; must obtain within 30 days if not held.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct live classes to groups of 3 or more people in approved formats the instructor is certified/trained in
  • May record videos in approved formats the instructor is certified/trained in, as requested by the Manager
  • Plan and execute routines that are safe and appropriate for participants of all levels
  • Provide options and educate participants on how to select activities based on their abilities
  • Initiate emergency response procedures, as needed
  • Promote Oasis programs and events through in-class announcements, as instructed
  • Promote proper theory and technique
  • May assist with special programs, services or projects on occasion
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

About the University Student Union

The University Student Union, as the heart of campus, uplifts and empowers students to achieve educational, personal and professional goals by providing leadership development, meaningful employment, and innovative programs, services and facilities. Facilities include the University Student Union and the 138,000 square foot Student Recreation Center (SRC).

Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Wellness Center, the Specialty Instructor is responsible for developing and instructing wellness routines and programs for groups of participants with a variety of skills and abilities. Routines and programs may include formats such as yoga, meditation, Reiki, breathing techniques, sound healing and art. Format assigned is based on departmental and program needs.

Essential Duties
  • Instruct live classes to groups of 3 or more people in approved formats the instructor is certified/trained in
  • May record videos in approved formats the instructor is certified/trained in, as requested by the Manager
  • Plan and execute routines that are safe and appropriate for participants of all levels
  • Provide options and educate participants on how to select activities based on their abilities
  • Initiate emergency response procedures, as needed

Minimum Qualifications

Instructor tier is dependent upon experience and certifications/trainings:

Tier I: No teaching experience required.

Tier II: Minimum one (1) year of cumulative experience instructing group classes.

Tier III: Minimum two (2) years of cumulative experience instructing group classes.

Tier IV: Minimum four (4) years of cumulative experience instructing group classes.

Tier V: Minimum six (6) years of cumulative experience instructing group classes; requires a masters level degree or advanced/master level certification.

Tiers I-IV each also require a minimum of one credential from: a degree in Health Science, Psychology, Art or a related field; a current nationally recognized wellness certification (WELCOA, National Wellness Institute, or comparable); or a current specialty certification/training from a nationally recognized school or certifying agency (YogaWorks, CorePower Yoga, the International Center for Reiki Training, or comparable).

Other Requirements
  • Tier I hires serve a 30-day introductory period under supervision before being cleared for independent teaching
  • Current American Red Cross Certification (adult CPR, AED and first aid) required; new hires without it must become certified within 30 days of hire date, at USU-sponsored (free) or self-funded training
  • Must maintain all required certifications/trainings in active status during employment
  • May be required to attend USU/SRC/OWC employee orientation and department-specific trainings and meetings

Working Conditions and Physical Abilities

Work is typically performed indoors. Requires ability to work weekends, evenings, holidays, finals weeks, and during academic interim and break periods, and public contact and/or instruction via video conferencing software. Physical demands include fingering, handling, and reaching with hands and arms; walking, running, skipping, jumping, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; frequently moving/lifting 10 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.

Pay, Benefits, and Work Schedule

Position is employed through the University Student Union (USU). Instructional hourly rate and tier are dependent upon experience and qualifications:

  • Tier 1: $23.00/hour
  • Tier 2: $26.00/hour
  • Tier 3: $31.00/hour
  • Tier 4: $36.00/hour
  • Tier 5: $43.00/hour
  • $20.00 per hour meeting rate for non-instruction

Part-time, FLSA Non-Exempt; temporary emergency 6-month appointment; may be renewed. Schedule varies based on department need and is determined by supervisor.

Background Check and Mandated Reporter

A satisfactory background check (including a criminal records check) is required. This position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
