Job summary

USG is seeking a Production/Department Manager to lead the Specialty Department (88 employees) at our Minnesota facility. You will oversee manufacturing operations for ceiling tile forming and finishing lines, drive safety, and develop a skilled workforce.

The role emphasizes continuous improvement, project scoping, capital projects, and meeting KPIs. Candidates with an Engineering degree and proven leadership will excel; compensation will reflect qualifications.

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred; prior Department Manager experience is a plus.

• LEAN Management exposure is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Specialty Department comprising 88 employees with direct report to 1 General Foreman.
• Oversee manufacturing operations of one ceiling tile forming/finishing line, stock makeup system and coatings.
• Train, motivate, and maintain safety for all department employees to ensure efficient operations.
• Develop and implement process improvements to meet plant operating requirements.
• Support project scopes, estimates, approvals, installation strategies, commissioning and start-up.
• Ensure OSHA compliance and safety program execution within the department.
• Drive accountability to attain key performance metrics and cost controls.
• Collaborate on capital projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Develop workforce potential and provide coaching to foster engagement.

Role & Responsibilities:

• Effectively leads the Specialty Department comprised of 88 employees, which includes a direct report of 1 General Foreman.


• This position is accountable for the manufacturing operations of one ceiling tile forming and finishing line, stock makup system and coatings. This line supplies the majority of ceilings offerings and products to USG customers.


• Responsible for training, motivating, and maintaining a level of safety for all department employees to provide for an efficient operation consistent with overall company safety objectives.


• Ability to proactively develop and implement process enhancements to meet plant operating requirements over the short and long term.


• Support the development of project scopes, estimates, approval documentation, arrangements, installation strategies, commissioning, and start-up of assigned projects.


• Oversight of department safety initiatives, including OSHA compliance.


• Responsible for implementing a strategy and driving accountability to ensure key performance metrics are attained.


• Interested in working with alternative resources in USG on manufacturing new products to respond to market trends.


• Support and facilitate capital project implementation.


• Lead continuous improvement initiatives within the department.


• Ability to develop workforce potential and provide coaching to motivate direct reports to your team to foster employee engagement.

Qualifications & Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred. Prior experience as a Department Manager is a plus.


• Leadership aptitude needed to manage and develop others.


• Proven communication, decision making and employee relations skills. Capacity to engage employees and effectively build rapport.


• Results-oriented, with demonstrated abilities to accomplish tasks on schedule and operate within cost constraints.


• Knowledgeable of safety compliance programs with a strong emphasis on safety, quality, and housekeeping.


• Adept at problem-solving, decision-making, and strategic planning.


• Ability to handle multiple projects and prioritize tasks.


• Track record driving continuous improvement. Prior exposure to LEAN Management is a plus.


• Salary may be adjusted based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

Rate of pay may be adjusted based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
