Job summary

Airgas, located in Independence, OH, seeks a Division Sales Tax Specialist to ensure accurate tax application, proper exemption documentation, and correct use tax handling across several states. You will work with sales, branches, and finance to mitigate risk and support tax compliance.

The role includes processing tax disputes, reviewing exemptions, and assisting with tax credits, returns, and transaction reviews to drive operational excellence.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years of sales tax or similar accounting/finance experience in corporate environments.
• High school diploma or equivalent; relevant experience acceptable.
• Working knowledge of sales and use tax regulations, procedures, and core accounting principles.
• Proficiency with Word, Excel, Google Workspace and ERP systems (e.g., SAP).
• Strong analytical, critical-thinking and data analysis skills with ability to resolve issues and manage priorities.

Responsibilities

• Taxability research across multiple states and dispute resolution with independent judgment.
• Review, validate and maintain customer exemption certificates and issue certificates to vendors as needed.
• Monitor SAP billing block and tax override reports; assist with monthly/quarterly tax returns.
• Collaborate with branch managers, sales leadership, Credit & Collections, and Cash Applications to resolve billing concerns and support audits.

About the Role

The Division Sales Tax Specialist is responsible for ensuring customers are taxed accurately, exemption certificates are properly documented, and use tax is appropriately applied across multiple states. This role manages and resolves multi-state customer tax disputes and non-payment issues by identifying root causes and balancing potential liability with customer satisfaction. Working closely with sales, branches, and finance teams, you will provide critical sales tax audit support and interpret applicable tax laws to mitigate risk. Additionally, you will support transaction reviews, tax credits, and return filings to drive overall tax compliance and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

• Taxability & Dispute Resolution: Research and interpret state-specific sales and use tax laws, resolving customer tax disputes, short pays, and non-payment issues across multiple states with independent judgment and discretion.
• Exemption & Certificate Governance: Review, validate, and maintain customer exemption certificates to substantiate tax-exempt status, while also issuing properly executed exemption certificates to vendors as needed.
• System Monitoring & Compliance Reporting: Monitor daily SAP billing block and tax override reports to assist branch stores with transaction issues, and calculate liabilities to file monthly and quarterly excise tax returns.
• Cross-Functional & Customer Collaboration: Partner with branch managers, sales leadership, Credit & Collections, and Cash Applications to resolve complex billing concerns, communicate tax regulations and assist with sales tax audits.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years of sales tax or similar accounting/finance experience in positions of increasing responsibility within a corporate environment.
• High school diploma or equivalent (with relevant experience).
• Working knowledge of sales and use tax regulations, procedures, and core accounting principles.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and Google Workspace, along with experience utilizing financial applications within an ERP environment (such as SAP).
• Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and data analysis skills with the proven ability to independently resolve issues and manage multiple priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Direct hands-on experience utilizing Vertex or similar specialized tax determination software.
• Prior experience managing multi-state sales tax audits and filing excise tax returns.
