Position Overview:
In accordance with Monogram Food’s Core Values and associated HS (Health & Safety) Team Policies, the Health & Safety Specialist supports continual improvement efforts in environmental, health, and safety performance at Monogram Foods and provides support to the HS Manager and site leadership regarding HS issues.
The Site HS Specialist plays a key role in supporting the overall HS function for the assigned site. In this role, you will get diverse experience, providing a great opportunity to grow and develop your technical and leadership skills. This will be your chance to make an impact and help create a zero-incident culture.
The position will report to the Site HS Manager. This is a single site-based role.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Practice safe working techniques and re-enforce HS policies, procedures, and guidelines as set out by Monogram Foods, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Be an active resource concerning team member health and safety, provide guidance and direction in HS programs to team member, supervisor, and managerial levels to ensure common competencies and effectiveness.
  • Support efforts to implement risk mitigation, injury prevention and HS compliance initiatives.
  • Assist in the development and execution of tactical strategic plans to improve site HS performance to continually improve overall HS performance.
  • Facilitate HS training program, including new hire, job-specific, contractor and required refresher training.
  • Support continuous improvement in the site HS Management Systems.
  • Support site incident and injury reporting, investigation, and recordkeeping; and worker’s compensation claims and site Return to Work program.
  • Support site environmental program and sustainability initiatives; including required environmental permits, reporting, monitoring and recordkeeping.
  • Coordinate site contractor safety program.
  • Ensure the timely completion of all required safety, environmental and sustainability reporting to internal and external interested parties.
  • Ensure key HS records are properly maintained.
  • Support site emergency response programs and site security programs.
  • Promote and support positive behaviors around health and safety issues
  • Aid in preparation, scheduling, monitoring and completion of safety-related action items and/or maintenance work orders.
  • Participate as an active member of the HS Committee, site Emergency Response Team and site First-Aid Team; as applicable.
  • Coordinate site HS communication efforts, including HS bulletin boards, signage, newsletters, and various electronic methods.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will have:

Education and Experience:

  • Technical degree in engineering, science, safety, industrial hygiene or similar discipline. Equivalent experience will be considered.
  • 2+ years of health and safety compliance experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in the food manufacturing, consumer products industry, or similar is a plus.
  • On-the-job required travel time: Under 25%

Competencies and Skills:

  • General knowledge and understanding of applicable federal, state/provincial and local HS regulations is desired.
  • Ability to collaborate, work beyond obstacles and build trust with impacted departments.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, financial reports, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively present information in a public setting.
  • Ability to perform intermediate math such as basic algebra and geometry.
  • Proficient computer skills with MS Office, MS Word, MS Excel or equivalent programs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where limited standardization exits.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Physical Demands:

  • Qualified candidates must be able to perform the following physical job requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation:
  • This position primarily requires a team member to walk and perform tasks in an industrial environment, bending, standing, climbing, or walking and can involve sitting for extended periods of time at a computer workstation.
  • This position may require the employee to enter and safely navigate industrial areas and environments that are wet, hot, cold, humid, dusty and/or noisy.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds
  • Must be able to sit, stand and walk for 7+ hours per day
  • Must be able to perform simple grasping for 7+ hours per shift
  • Must be able to express and exchange written and spoken word in English
  • Must be able to safely ascend and descend ladders
  • Must be able to wear all required personal protective equipment
  • Visual and hearing acuity.

Work Environment and Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Works in a general office and manufacturing plant environment.
  • Occasionally exposed to airborne particles, wet, humid conditions, inclement weather, extreme temperatures, and potentially hazardous chemicals.
  • Occasionally required to work near moving mechanical parts
  • This role will require extended hours based on production needs, including work to be performed after regular business hours and on weekends.
