The successful candidate will serve as a trusted safety advisor, promoting safe work practices, identifying risks, and driving continuous improvement within the organization.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, engineering, math sciences, psychology, or closely related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of related safety experience with 90% safety responsibilities.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations (29 CFR 1910 and 1926) and NFPA/ANSI standards.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as safety expert guiding operations during planning, pre-job reviews, site walks, execution, and post-project evaluations.
  • Lead or support investigations for incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and tracking corrective actions.
  • Evaluate safety performance trends and develop injury and incident prevention strategies.
  • Promote a safety culture with accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement across field operations.

National Grid is hiring a Field Safety Specialist for our Safety & Health - Field Safety department. This position is located in Buffalo, NY.

Job Purpose

As a Field Safety Specialist, you will work to improve the overall safety culture and ensure regulatory and company compliance by implementing and maintaining safety programs across operations. You will work closely with field personnel and develop positive, professional relationships with all levels of management, represented employees, contractors, and external stakeholders during all phases of operation.

This is a field-based position encompassing worksites throughout the assigned service territory and requires daily travel to work sites. The position primarily supports electric operations, while also providing safety support to operational support groups such as Facilities and Fleet.

The successful candidate will serve as a trusted safety advisor, promoting safe work practices, identifying and mitigating risks, and driving continuous improvement throughout the organization.

Key Accountabilities
  • Serve as safety expert to guide operations teams during large project planning, pre-job reviews, site walk-throughs, execution activities, and post-project evaluations, while ensuring identified risks, controls, and follow-up actions are addressed through completion.
  • Lead, facilitate or collaborate with operation stakeholder teams for incident, injury, property damage, near miss, and other safety-related investigations by applying safety expertise to identify root causes, recommend corrective actions, and ensure follow-up actions are tracked through completion.
  • Evaluate safety performance trends to identify emerging risks, develop targeted injury and incident prevention strategies, and drive local projects, training, or mitigation actions through implementation.
  • Champion a safety culture that reinforces accountability, active engagement, shared learning, and continuous improvement across field operations.
  • Develop and/or deliver risk management materials related to hazardous tasks to contractor crews, field crews, fleet mechanics, and warehouse crews; this includes work during emergency storm response.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in one of the following: occupational safety, engineering, math sciences, psychology, or very closely related field of study required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of related safety experience, where safety oversight and responsibilities comprised at least 90% of overall job duties required.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations (29 CFR 1910 and 1926), RMI rack standards, DOT / FMCSA regulations, ANSI standards, NFPA standards required.
  • Ability to build credibility across diverse teams, engage effectively with employees and leaders at all levels, and navigate complex conversations in a way that drives alignment, trust, and positive safety outcomes.
  • Ability to operate independently in a field-based role with minimal day-to-day oversight, applying sound judgment, disciplined organization, and available tools and systems to prioritize work effectively and deliver high-quality results.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel extensively throughout the service territory required.
  • (Preferred) Certified through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), preferably CSP, ASP or GSP but will consider other certifications.
