Job summary

National Grid is seeking a Helper in the Operations and Construction Department for New York City. This entry-level role supports traffic control, excavation, and heavy labor as part of a field crew working on urban infrastructure projects.

You will perform manual tasks such as digging, backfilling, and pavement work, under supervision, and may operate and set up underground tools. A valid CDL may be required after hiring.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to perform strenuous work including lifting up to 80 lbs+.
  • CDL license required after hiring.
  • Three years of similar or related work; plumbing experience preferred.
  • DOT safety and related training may be required.

Job description

As a Helper in the Operations and Construction Department for New York City, you will experience the personal challenge of working for a world class organization and leader in the Utilities and Energy Industry.

Key Accountabilities
  • Perform traffic control, flagging functions.
  • Perform manual-laboring work such as digging, backfilling, breaking and removing; pavement, (asphalt /concrete).
  • Helper may work with heavy pneumatic tools; Provide physical assistance for setting up and operating underground tools; work with higher-classified personnel by performing laboring functions in connection with the higher classification. This includes strenuous work through out the day (including but not limited to) squatting, walking, lifting tools and materials greater than 80lbs.
  • Perform similar or less-skilled work as assigned.
  • If hired, employee will be required to obtain and maintain a valid CDL license.
Qualifications
  • Three years similar or related work. Plumbing experience preferred.
  • Should be mechanically inclined and capable of performing strenuous work.
  • Applicant will be required to demonstrate the mental ability and aptitude to progress to hire classifications.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • NOTE: Must successfully complete the following: - DOT Physical, Respirator Fit Level 1 - Pre-assessment testing, regulatory safety training, traffic control/flagger training, Gas Fundamentals training, Abnormal Operating Condition Operator qualification training, Soft-Tissue Injury Prevention training, and Helper-specific training programs.
  • Valid Driver’s License required with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy
  • Pass Field Assessment Test
