Job summary

National Grid is seeking two Environmental Engineers/Scientists to join our team in Syracuse, NY and Buffalo, NY. You will support our ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and manage a regional environmental compliance program across electric and gas infrastructure projects.

Responsibilities include leading environmental compliance activities through project phases, developing procedures, liaising with regulators, and ensuring regulatory adherence while fostering sustainable practices

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, or related environmental discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of related environmental work experience
  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance programs
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience supporting environmental compliance, permitting, remediation, or related programs

Job Purpose

This is an exciting opportunity to support our ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and work on a wide variety of electric and gas infrastructure projects, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and make a direct impact on environmental stewardship across New York. The role holder will be responsible for managing a regional Environmental Compliance program to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal procedures.

Key Accountabilities
  • Lead environmental compliance activities throughout project planning, design, construction, and operational phases.
  • Develop and maintain environmental procedures by monitoring emerging environmental laws and regulations.
  • Serve as a key liaison with environmental regulatory agencies during inspections, audits, and compliance activities.
  • Partner with Operations, Engineering, Construction, and Project teams to identify environmental risks, implement practical compliance solutions, and drive compliance initiatives.
  • Manage environmental incidents, investigations, remediation efforts, and corrective action programs.
  • Conduct environmental assessments and inspections at substations, operating facilities, fleet garages, rights-of-way, gas regulator stations, and other company properties.
  • Manage environmental due diligence activities for property transactions and third-party access requests.
  • Coordinate waste characterization, recycling, transportation, and disposal activities while maintaining environmental permits, reports, plans, registrations, and compliance documentation.
  • Manage field work on properties with environmental regulatory encumbrances.
  • Build and foster close working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to share best practices, train employees, and communicate business decsisions.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related environmental discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of related or equivalent environmental work experience
  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and environmental compliance programs
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience supporting environmental compliance, environmental permitting, remediation, or related environmental programs

Preferred:

  • Experience working within the utility, energy, construction, engineering, or environmental consulting industries
  • Knowledge of RCRA, TSCA, Petroleum Bulk Storage (PBS), Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC), SPDES, and related environmental regulations
  • RCRA, DOT, and 40-Hour OSHA HAZWOPER training
  • Experience supporting environmental due diligence, waste management, site remediation, or regulatory inspections
  • Familiarity with contractor management requirements such as procurement and reviews of proposals and invoices, for consulting, laboratories and field service providers
  • Familiarity with GIS, environmental data management systems, or environmental reporting tools

$81,000 - $91,000 a year
