Job summary

LyondellBasell is seeking a Control System Specialist to ensure reliable SIS, DCS, and PLC operations, supporting maintenance, testing, and change management activities across multiple process units. The role demands hands-on troubleshooting and strong collaboration with operations and engineering teams.

You will lead FAT/SAT, commissioning, and startup efforts, while updating procedures, training personnel, and contributing to safety and reliability initiatives.

Qualifications

• Experience with SIS, DCS, and PLC systems.
• Familiarity with IEC 61511 / ISA 84 standards.
• Completion of SIS training (e.g., ISA 84, TÜV, INERIS, CFSE).

• Support capital and expense projects by reviewing control system scope and aligning with project objectives and budgets.
• Develop long-range plans for control system reliability, including obsolescence mitigation strategies.
• Execute preventive and corrective maintenance for SIS, DCS, and PLC hardware.
• Deliver targeted training to Operations and Instrumentation personnel on control system operation and proof testing procedures.
• Collaborate with SIS engineers on SIF design, validation, and lifecycle management.
• Support or lead technical evaluations and author MOCs for control system modifications (Intelex).
• Conduct OE audits, process safety assessments, and safety observations.

The Control System Specialist is responsible for ensuring the reliable operation and compliance of the Safety Instrumented System (SIS), Distributed Control System (DCS), and Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) infrastructures. These systems are critical for the continuous protection of personnel, the environment, and plant assets.

A Day in the Life

Act as the primary technical liaison for Operations regarding control system performance and issues, coordinating with control engineers, specialists, and technologists to ensure timely resolution.

Provide advanced troubleshooting and diagnostics for SIS, DCS, and PLC systems, addressing hardware, software, and network-level faults to maintain system integrity.

Design, implement, and document logic and HMI configuration changes across SIS, DCS, and PLC platforms, ensuring strict adherence to the Management of Change (MOC) process.

Lead and support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning, and startup activities to validate control system functionality and compliance with design specifications.

Support capital and expense projects by reviewing control system scope, approving design packages, and ensuring alignment with project objectives, timelines, and budgets.

Develop and maintain long-range plans for control system reliability, including obsolescence mitigation strategies and system health assessments.

Execute preventive and corrective maintenance for SIS, DCS, and PLC hardware, including point assignments, diagnostics, and system testing to ensure optimal performance.

Deliver targeted training to Operations and Instrumentation personnel on control system operation, SIS HMI usage, and proof testing procedures.

Collaborate with SIS engineers on Safety Instrumented Function (SIF) design, validation, and lifecycle management.

Support or lead technical evaluations and author MOCs for control system modifications, ensuring timely closure of action items within Intelex.

Conduct or support Operational Excellence (OE) audits, process safety assessments, and safety observations, escalating HSE concerns as required.

Review, update, and approve control system procedures and preventive maintenance plans in alignment with site standards and reliability goals.

Ensure compliance with site policies and procedures, executing the CVO strategy with a GoalZero mindset.

Serve as a control systems technical resource for instrument technicians and operations personnel.

You Bring This Value

High School Diploma or GED required.

Typically a minimum of 6 years of industry experience in Control Systems support or Instrumentation & Electrical (I&E) technician roles.

Working knowledge of safety instrumented systems (SIS), distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and instrumentation.

Capable of performing routine maintenance and diagnostics on live SIS, DCS, and PLC systems across multiple process units, including work inside safety and control equipment enclosures.

Preferred:

Associate degree in a related technical field (e.g., Instrumentation, Electrical Engineering Technology, or Process Control) is preferred.

10 years of industry experience in Control Systems Engineering (CSE), Operations, or Instrumentation & Electrical (I&E).

Hands-on experience with configuration and programming in Emerson DeltaV or Honeywell TPS/Experion control systems, including hardware and I/O setup.

Demonstrated ability to collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams and interface effectively at all organizational levels.

Completion of industry-recognized SIS training (e.g., ISA 84, TÜV, INERIS, CFSE).

Familiarity with IEC 61511 / ISA 84 standards and site-specific safety instrumented system requirements (e.g., ES-413).
