Job summary

Joliet Park District is seeking an Inclusion Aide to assist staff in providing recreation programs for individuals with disabilities in Joliet. The role involves 1:1 support, promoting safety, and helping participants engage in activities across afterschool programs, summer camps, and gym activities.

Prior experience with disabilities and CPR/First Aid training are preferred. Hours are part-time with potential evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

  • Experience in recreational programming or summer camp preferred.
  • One year of experience working with individuals with disabilities preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support and assist individuals with disabilities participating in local park district programs
  • Demonstrate dependability, promptness, flexibility, and punctuality
  • Maintain effective communication with supervisors, staff, participants, and families
  • Directly responsible for the safety and supervision of participants
  • Communicate effectively to participants and be able to explain based on each child’s development
  • Participate and monitor participants in various programming, including swimming
  • Promote and encourage participation in daily activities; adapt activities to the needs of the individual with special needs; assist with understanding and following rules
  • Follow SRJC/Joliet Park District policies, rules, and safety regulations
  • Use appropriate and positive discipline when necessary for participants
  • Document and communicate any issues that are occurring with participants, families, or staff
  • Attend staff meetings as required

Summary

To assist staff in providing recreation programs for individuals with disabilities in their communities while promoting a safe and enjoyable recreation experience. Inclusion Aides will work1:1 with individuals with disabilities of various abilities and agesin the Joliet Park District programs (before/after school program, preschool, summer camp, gymnastics etc.) blending in and working alongside park district staff. The goal of inclusion is to help the registrant participate in the least restrictive environment with peers without disabilities. As an aide, you will assist one or more individual(s) who has requested special assistance to participate in the program in which they registered. This involves but is not limited to; assisting the individuals with social skills, personal care needs, understanding and following rules and directions and/or modifying an activity so they can participate.

Supervisory responsibilities

Participants in the Joliet Park District programs

Work environment

This job will be performed indoors in a temperature controlled setting. At times, job tasks will include participating outdoors with varying weather conditions. Work environment may be loud at times.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, bend, kneel, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear; tasted and smell; and carry materials. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Education and Experience

  • Some high school education
  • Experience in recreational programming/summer camp preferred
  • One year experience working with individuals with disabilities preferred

Additional eligibility requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Ability to obtain CPR/AED/First Aid training within 30 days of hire
  • Complete DCFS Mandated Reporter Training
