Job summary

Westerly Public Schools (RI) Transportation is seeking a School Bus Aide to support students with extraordinary needs during transit. The role involves assisting with seating, securing wheelchairs, and maintaining safety while buses operate, under the supervision of the bus driver.

The ideal candidate has experience with children in educational settings, strong communication skills with all abilities, and a patient, positive attitude.

Qualifications

• Experience working with children in an educational or childcare environment.
• Knowledge of boarding/exiting a bus for wheelchairs or other devices.
• Ability to communicate with children of all abilities.
• Patience, respect and a positive attitude in interacting with the public.

Responsibilities

• Manage behavior of students using safety care protocols during entry, transit, or exit.
• Secure seating and assist devices including wheelchairs and harnesses.
• Provide written records of violations to Transportation Dispatcher as needed.
• Supervise assistive technology devices and ensure proper handling.
• Assist bus drivers with day-to-day management and emergency procedures.
• Communicate effectively with students and participate in staff meetings.
• Carry out health plans and provide first aid as necessary.
• Assist students crossing streets if needed.
• Maintain confidentiality.
• Perform related work as required and assigned.
