Job summary

Darien Public Schools is seeking Special Education Teachers for long-term substitute assignments at elementary and high school levels. You will assess students, adapt lessons, and support the development and updating of IEPs to meet individual needs.

Responsibilities include coordinating with teachers, paraprofessionals, and families to implement services, ensuring IDEA compliance, and meeting progress goals throughout the school year. CT certification is required.

Qualifications

• Must hold at least one CT teaching certificate in Comprehensive Special Education (K-12, PK-12, or 1-12 not for elementary).
• CT certification required for employment as a special education teacher.
• Experience with IEP development and IDEA compliance is expected.

Responsibilities

• Assess students’ knowledge and skills to determine strengths and needs.
• Adapt lessons to meet the needs of special education students.
• Help develop and update IEPs outlining services and accommodations.
• Develop transition plans for graduation or moving to a new school.
• Ensure services outlined in IEPs are provided and progress is tracked.
• Meet with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators to discuss progress.
• Collaborate with paraprofessionals to support students.
• Ensure compliance with IDEA requirements.

REQUIREMENT

Must hold at least one of these Connecticut teaching certificates:

• Comprehensive Special Education, K–12 (#165)
• Comprehensive Special Education, PK–12 (#065)
• Comprehensive Special Education, 1–12 (#265) (not for elementary)

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assess students’ knowledge and skills to determine their strengths and needs
• Adapt, and collaborate with teachers to adapt, lessons to meet the needs of special education students
• Help develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), which outline the services and accommodations each student will receive
• Develop transition plans that outline services to help students as they graduate or move to a new school
• Ensure that students are receiving the services outlined in their IEPs
• Update IEPs throughout the school year to reflect students’ progress and goals
• Meet with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators to discuss students’ progress
• Work with paraprofessionals to ensure that they have the skills and information necessary to work with special education students
• Ensure that schools comply with requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
• Such other related duties as assigned
